Chapter 6

A nurse approached Claire with a towel and a calm voice.
“Mrs. Whitmore, we need you to stay seated for a moment. You’re shaking.”
Claire almost said she was fine.
Then she looked at her hands.
They were trembling so hard the towel fell from her fingers.
The nurse picked it up gently and placed it around her shoulders.
That kindness nearly undid her.
“Can I see him?” Claire whispered.
“Not yet.”
Two words.
Different from Daniel’s two words.
Handle it.
These were not dismissive.
They were painful because they were honest.
Claire nodded, though her throat closed around the motion.
Across the hallway, Daniel stood near Lily’s bay.
Not inside.
Near.
He had been told to wait there too, but his body angled toward Noah’s doors every few seconds.
Lily’s small hand lifted weakly, searching for someone.
Daniel instinctively moved toward her.
Claire saw it.
So did Dr. Marsh.
So did Daniel.
He stopped halfway.
The shame on his face might have mattered in another room.
Not this one.
Claire did not blame Lily for needing comfort.
But she could no longer ignore the pattern of Daniel’s body moving where it had learned to go first.
A hospital social worker appeared near Dr. Marsh, speaking quietly.
Claire caught only fragments.
Timeline.
Parent statements.
Delayed arrival.
Separate treatment areas.
Nothing final.
Nothing accusatory enough to become legal.
Yet.
Daniel heard some of it and stiffened.
“Is that necessary?”
Dr. Marsh turned.
“When a child arrives in urgent distress after a reported delay in care, we document carefully.”
Daniel’s face flushed.
“I didn’t delay care. I was bringing another child to the hospital.”
Dr. Marsh held his gaze.
“And your own child?”
Silence.
Claire closed her eyes.
There are questions that are not asked for answers.
They are asked to place the truth in the air where everyone must breathe it.
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“I didn’t know it was that bad.”
Claire’s voice barely held.
“You didn’t want to know.”
He flinched harder at that than at accusation.
Because it was closer.
He had not chosen against Noah with full information.
He had chosen not to gather information from the person whose fear no longer mattered to him.
That was worse in its own way.
Dr. Marsh turned as the treatment doors opened a few inches.
A nurse stepped out.
Claire stood too fast.
The nurse did not give an outcome.
Only asked for the mother.
Daniel tried to follow.
Dr. Marsh’s arm lifted.
May you like
“No.”
