Chapter 3

The emergency department entrance was chaos when Claire arrived.

Rainwater streaked the glass doors.

Paramedics moved fast.

Nurses called room numbers.

A security guard tried to clear the path as Claire stumbled inside, barefoot inside wet sneakers, carrying Noah like her arms were the only thing keeping him connected to the world.

Then she saw Daniel.

Not rushing toward her.

Not searching for his son.

He was beside Lily Reed’s gurney.

His hand rested on the metal rail as nurses rolled the little girl inside.

He was speaking to the medical staff in the voice Claire used to know.

Urgent.

Focused.

Protective.

“Her oxygen dropped. She was wheezing. She needs help now.”

Claire heard every word.

Her body went cold despite Noah’s heat.

Daniel could be decisive.

Daniel could explain symptoms.

Daniel could fight for a child.

Just not theirs.

Lily’s eyes were closed behind the oxygen mask.

Claire did not hate her.

That was the part no one would understand later.

She did not hate a six-year-old girl struggling to breathe.

She hated the man who had made love into triage and still expected to be called a good father.

Noah’s head slipped against her shoulder.

Claire screamed Daniel’s name.

He turned.

For one second, he looked annoyed.

Then he saw Noah.

Really saw him.

The annoyance shattered into panic.

“Claire?”

She backed away before he could reach them.

“You carried her past him while our son was seizing!”

People turned.

Nurses paused only long enough to assess.

Dr. Elena Marsh moved toward them with the calm of someone trained not to let emotion waste seconds.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Lily couldn’t breathe—please, let me take Noah.”

That sentence broke something open in Claire.

Because he still said Lily first.

Dr. Marsh’s eyes moved quickly between them.

Claire’s soaked cardigan.

Noah’s limp body.

Daniel’s guilt.

Lily’s gurney in the background.

The physician did not need the marriage history to understand the emergency hierarchy had already failed outside her doors.

“Neither could Noah,” she said.

Daniel stopped as if the words had physically struck him.

The nurses took Noah then.

Claire let them.

Not because she wanted to.
