Chapter 5

Daniel had met Vanessa Reed eighteen months earlier at a fundraising dinner for St. Augustine Medical Center.
That fact moved through Claire’s mind with cruel timing as she sat on the emergency department floor.
A hospital fundraiser.
How perfect.
Daniel had worn a navy suit and told Claire she looked tired before they left the house.
Not beautiful.
Not even fine.
Tired.
Vanessa had been seated beside him at the sponsor table because her company donated to the pediatric wing.
She was bright, polished, recently divorced, and spoke to Daniel like every sentence he said deserved careful attention.
Claire remembered noticing it.
Then hating herself for noticing.
She was not the jealous type, Daniel always said.
That was one of the identities he liked assigning her when it suited him.
You’re not insecure.
You’re not dramatic.
You’re stronger than that.
Compliments that became cages.
Over the next year, Vanessa’s name appeared gradually.
Vanessa recommended a contractor.
Vanessa knew a school consultant.
Vanessa’s daughter Lily had a recital.
Vanessa needed help moving something heavy.
Vanessa had no one else to call.
Claire asked once, “Why does she call you before her own family?”
Daniel said, “Because I’m reliable.”
That answer had hurt more than a denial.
Reliable.
Claire thought of Noah waiting at the window last month because Daniel promised to take him to the aquarium, then canceled when Vanessa’s car would not start.
She thought of Noah falling asleep in his dinosaur pajamas beside a packed backpack.
She thought of Daniel saying, “He’s five. He’ll forget.”
Noah did not forget.
Children rarely forget being unchosen.
They simply learn to ask with less hope.
In the emergency hallway, Daniel crouched in front of Claire.
She turned her face away.
“Please,” he said. “I need to know what’s happening.”
“You should have needed that when I called.”
“I made the best choice I could.”
Claire looked at him then.
“No. You made the choice that felt easiest to defend because Lily is not yours.”
Daniel recoiled.
“That’s unfair.”
Claire’s laugh came out broken.
“Is it?”
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Because somewhere beyond the doors, their son was surrounded by strangers trying to undo what time might have already done.

And Daniel’s defense sounded obscene even to himself.
