Chapter 7

Claire followed the nurse through the doors.

Only for a moment.

Only far enough to answer questions.

Not far enough for the story to resolve.

Daniel remained in the hallway, staring at the glass as it swung shut behind his wife.

For the first time since arriving, he was alone with the consequences of sequence.

Lily first.

Noah second.

Vanessa’s call first.

Claire’s call doubted.

Another child in his arms.

His own son carried in behind him by a mother soaked from rain and terror.

He pressed both hands against the back of his neck.

The fluorescent lights made everything look unforgiving.

Dr. Marsh stood nearby, reviewing a chart on a tablet. She did not comfort him.

Daniel wanted to resent her for that.

He could not.

Instead, he said quietly, “Is she telling them I abandoned him?”

Dr. Marsh looked up.

“She is telling them what happened.”

“That’s not the same.”

“No,” the doctor said. “But sometimes it leads to the same place.”

Daniel swallowed.

Beyond the hallway, Lily coughed behind her oxygen mask. A nurse adjusted something near her gurney.

Daniel looked over.

Lily’s eyes opened faintly.

She was a frightened child.

Not the villain.

None of this belonged on her small shoulders.

That made Daniel feel worse, not better.

Because he could not hate one child to justify failing another.

His phone buzzed.

Vanessa.

He stared at the screen.

For months, he had answered that name quickly.

Too quickly.

Now the vibration felt like a verdict.

He silenced it.

Then it buzzed again.

Vanessa.

Dr. Marsh noticed.

Daniel turned the screen downward.

A minute later, a text appeared.

How is Lily? Did Claire cause a scene?

Daniel read the preview before he could stop himself.

The words hit him with sudden clarity.

Not How is Noah?

Not Are both children okay?

Did Claire cause a scene?

He looked toward Lily.

Then toward Noah’s doors.

Then at the phone in his hand.

The first crack in his defense widened.

He had not been pulled into a noble emergency.

He had walked willingly into a world where Claire’s fear was inconvenience and Vanessa’s fear was command.

The treatment doors opened again.

Claire stepped out, face ashen.

Daniel moved toward her.

She lifted one hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.
