Chapter 9

The emergency department grew louder around them.

A new ambulance arrived.

A child cried near registration.

Someone called for a respiratory cart near another room.

Life continued brutally, refusing to pause for Claire’s private collapse.

She slid back down the wall, knees unable to hold her any longer.

A nurse asked if she needed a chair.

Claire shook her head.

The floor was cold.

It helped.

Daniel remained standing, useless in the way people become useless when consequences exceed intention.

He had meant to help Lily.

He had meant to manage Claire later.

He had meant to explain.

He had meant to believe there would be time.

That was the word haunting him now.

Time.

He had assumed Noah had some.

Claire had not.

Dr. Marsh crouched in front of Claire, not too close.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I know this is unbearable. We will update you as soon as we can.”

Claire nodded.

Her eyes stayed on the treatment doors.

Daniel took one step closer.

“Claire, please let me sit with you.”

She did not look at him.

“No.”

“I’m his father.”

Her head turned slowly.

“Then start acting like one without asking me for permission to feel better.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

No defense came.

For once.

Across the hall, Lily’s nurse adjusted the blanket around the little girl. Lily’s eyes opened again, scared and unfocused.

Claire saw her and felt a complicated ache.

A child should not be alone either.

But Claire was done being the woman expected to make moral room for everyone while her own child disappeared behind doors.

She whispered, “Where is Vanessa?”

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

“I don’t know.”

Claire nodded once.

Of course.

Vanessa’s daughter had Daniel.

Claire’s son had Claire.

And Daniel had stood in the middle pretending the imbalance was an emergency accident rather than a life he had been building in secret.

Dr. Marsh stood again as the treatment doors shifted.

Claire’s body tensed.

Daniel’s did too.

A staff member stepped out, but not with answers.

Only more urgency.

More movement.

More instructions passed between professionals.

The door closed.

Claire covered her face.

Daniel’s reflection appeared in the glass beside the doors, distorted by fluorescent glare.

He looked like a man watching judgment approach but not yet hearing the sentence.
