Chapter 8

Claire stood outside the treatment doors with one hand pressed flat against the wall.

She had answered the questions.

Temperature.

Timeline.

Shaking.

Breathing.

Time of first symptom.

Time of first call.

Who was present.

Who responded.

Who did not.

Each answer felt like cutting herself open under fluorescent light.

The nurse had written everything down.

Not cruelly.

Not judgmentally.

Worse.

Professionally.

Claire wanted to ask if Noah would be okay.

She did ask.

The nurse’s face softened, but no answer came that Claire could hold.

“We’re working on him,” was all she said.

Working.

A word full of effort and empty of promise.

Now Daniel stood a few feet away, phone in hand, guilt rearranging his face.

“Claire,” he said.

She looked at him.

He held up the phone slightly, as if evidence of Vanessa’s selfishness might reduce his own.

“I didn’t realize…”

Claire’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Disbelief.

“You didn’t realize what?”

He looked lost.

“That she didn’t ask about Noah.”

Claire stared at him.

“You needed a text message to notice?”

The question struck him silent.

Her voice trembled but did not rise.

“I told you. Your son’s body told you. The doctor told you. You still needed Vanessa to disappoint you before you understood?”

Daniel’s eyes reddened.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire closed her eyes.

She had imagined those words many times.

After missed dinners.

After unexplained calls.

After Noah’s aquarium backpack sat by the door untouched.

After Daniel told her she made everything harder than it had to be.

She had imagined sorry as a door opening.

Now it sounded too small for the hallway.

“Do not apologize to me while I don’t know whether our son can hear my voice.”

Daniel’s face crumpled.

Dr. Marsh stepped back into position near the treatment entrance as another staff member moved through.

The doors opened briefly.

Claire turned toward the gap.

She saw motion.

Medical staff.

The edge of a bed.

A gray blanket.

Then the doors closed again.

No diagnosis.

No tests.

No outcome.

Only the terrible continuation of not knowing.

Daniel whispered, “Let me be there.”

Claire looked at him, tears finally falling again.

“You were there.”

He froze.

“You were right here in the building. With her.”

The words did not need volume.

They needed only accuracy.
