Chapter 1 - The Phone Inside Her ShoeThe doors of the pediatric emergency department flew open hard enough to strike the wall.

Preston Hale rushed inside carrying twelve-year-old Sophie against his chest. Her head rested limply against his shoulder. One arm hung at an unnatural angle, and the torn sleeve of her blue sweater exposed bruises in several different shades.

“She fell down the stairs—it was an accident!”

His voice filled the crowded department.

People turned.

A nurse pulled a hospital bed into the aisle while Dr. Daniel Chen ran from Trauma Room 2. Rebecca Hale pushed through the waiting area, her face white with terror.

“Sophie!”

Preston laid the girl on the bed, continuing to speak over everyone.

“She slipped near the basement steps. I heard her fall. I found her unconscious.”

Rebecca reached for her daughter, but Dr. Chen held up one hand.

“Let us stabilize her first.”

The trauma team moved quickly. They attached monitors, placed an oxygen mask over Sophie’s face, and started an IV. Rebecca stood beside the bed, touching only the tips of Sophie’s fingers.

Then she saw the bruises.

Fresh purple marks covered one shoulder.

Older yellow bruises curved around Sophie’s wrist and upper arm.

There were too many to belong to one fall.

Rebecca turned toward Preston.

He stopped speaking for the first time since entering.

“Activate security and preserve everything,” Rebecca said.

The lead nurse, Nora Blake, looked at her sharply.

“Everything?”

“Her clothing, her shoes, every photograph, every camera feed. No one removes anything from this room.”

Preston’s performance of panic became anger.

“What are you implying?”

Rebecca did not answer.

Nora began placing Sophie’s torn clothing into evidence bags. One sneaker had split along the heel. When Nora pulled at the damaged lining, something hard shifted inside.

She opened the seam carefully.

A cracked smartphone slid into her gloved hand.

Its screen was dark, but a small red indicator remained active.

“This phone was hidden inside her shoe,” Nora said, “and it’s still recording.”

Preston lunged.

Two hospital security officers caught him before he reached the evidence bag.

“Give me that!” he shouted. “It belongs to my daughter!”

“Then why are you trying to destroy it?” Rebecca asked.

Preston twisted against the officers.

Dr. Chen raised Sophie’s imaging report beside the bed.

“Her wrist fracture happened long before today.”

Rebecca looked directly at Preston.

He stared at Sophie as though willing her never to wake.

Then he leaned toward the unconscious child and snarled, “You should’ve stopped causing trouble.”

The room went silent.

Preston’s face changed when he noticed the microphone mounted beside the ceiling camera.

Nora lifted the sealed evidence bag.

Sophie’s fingers twitched beneath the blanket.

Rebecca recognized the phone’s cracked pink case.

She had bought it for Sophie three months earlier.

Preston told her the child lost it at school.

Sophie had not lost it.

She had hidden it.
