Chapter 13 - The Doctor with Dr. Chen’s FaceHospital security found Dr. Chen’s duplicate leaving through the surgical corridor.

The man removed a silicone facial mask inside an elevator. Beneath it was a younger face with a scar near the jaw.

He escaped before officers reached the garage.

The badge he used belonged to Dr. Chen.

The fingerprints on the sensor also matched.

Dr. Chen remembered losing a pair of gloves during a medical conference six months earlier. Someone could have preserved his prints.

Arthur’s system did not merely forge documents.

It created physical substitutes capable of appearing inside rooms under surveillance.

Rebecca looked toward the camera above Sophie’s door.

Every image now required context beyond appearance.

Arthur called again.

“I created redundancy because institutions trust identity more than behavior.”

“You created doubt so no witness could ever be believed,” Rebecca said.

“Doubt protects the innocent from impulsive judgment.”

“It protects whoever owns the better forgery.”

Arthur offered the location of one Havenbridge convoy in exchange for Room Zero’s master encryption key.

Federal technicians did not know where the key was.

Sophie did.

She had seen Preston hide a small silver drive inside the lining of his briefcase. The briefcase remained with his attorney.

Detective Ortiz obtained a warrant.

The attorney claimed privilege.

A court ordered the case sealed until review.

By the time investigators opened it, the silver drive was gone.

Security footage showed the attorney handing it to Mallory Pierce outside the courthouse.

Mallory boarded a private plane.

Its registered destination was Maine.

Arthur’s first Continuity property had been built near an abandoned naval hospital on the coast.

The federal team prepared to follow.

Meanwhile, Olivia began experiencing severe abdominal pain.

Dr. Chen ordered imaging.

The scan showed a small tracking device implanted beneath the skin near her hip.

The procedure had been performed years earlier.

The device transmitted location and biometric data to Room Zero.

Olivia stared at the image.

“They said it was a vitamin port.”

Arthur had monitored her body every day of her life.

Removing it required minor surgery.

Olivia refused at first.

“If I take it out, Father won’t know I’m alive.”

Rebecca understood.

Surveillance had become proof of existence.

Arthur taught the child that being watched meant being protected.

Rebecca did not pressure her.

“You decide when it comes out.”

Olivia looked toward Sophie.

“Does Mom let you decide things?”

Sophie answered weakly.

“Dad said she let me make dangerous choices.”

Rebecca felt both girls watching for evidence that her kindness contained another hidden demand.

The strongest thing she could do was remain consistent.

Arthur transmitted a new video.

The missing Havenbridge children sat inside a bright cafeteria.

They appeared unharmed.

Behind them stood Mallory, Judge Bell, and the false Dr. Chen.

Arthur said, “Bring Sophie and Olivia to Maine. The children go free.”

Rebecca refused.

“You will move them again.”

“Then one child chooses.”

The screen divided.

Sophie’s name appeared on one side.

Olivia’s on the other.

Arthur instructed them to vote on which twin should enter Continuity willingly.

The other would remain with Rebecca.

He wanted the sisters to sacrifice each other or themselves.

Sophie looked at Olivia.

Olivia looked at the monitor.

Neither spoke.

Then Sophie raised the evidence bag containing her hidden phone.

“We already recorded your offer.”

Arthur’s expression changed.

The hospital’s independent evidence system had captured the entire call.

Sophie had learned from the first recording.

This time, she made sure the threat existed in more than one place.

Arthur disconnected.

Federal technicians traced the brief signal.

He was not in Maine.

He was inside Rebecca’s former family home in Tennessee.

The house had been empty since the divorce.

A live camera showed Arthur standing inside Sophie’s bedroom.

On the wall behind him hung dozens of photographs Rebecca had never taken.

Sophie sleeping.

Rebecca working.

Preston arguing.

Arthur had watched their family from inside the house for years.

Then he opened the closet.

A woman sat inside a hidden room.

Rebecca recognized her immediately.

Her mother, Diane Morgan, supposedly dead for nine years.

Arthur looked into the camera.

“Your mother helped select which daughter came home after the highway crash.”
