Arthur Hale died five years earlier.

Federal agents arrived before Preston.
The gates opened automatically when their vehicles approached, as though the estate expected them.
Inside, the mansion contained two identical nursery wings.
One painted blue.
One painted green.
Sophie’s childhood bedroom in Tennessee had been modeled after the blue room.
Olivia’s institutional room matched the green one.
Arthur designed both environments before the girls were born.
Every toy, picture, book, and item of furniture formed part of the comparison study.
One child would be raised inside an ordinary family conflict.
The other inside controlled institutional care.
At age twelve, they were supposed to be reunited and evaluated.
Preston had accelerated the reunion because Rebecca’s custody appeal threatened the legal structure.
Arthur’s study notes described Preston as Guardian Candidate P.
His aggression, financial dependence, and need for paternal approval were not unexpected flaws.
They were measured variables.
Arthur had conditioned his son as thoroughly as the girls.
That truth did not excuse Preston.
It showed the chain was longer.
Agents found Olivia inside the green nursery.
She was unconscious but breathing.
Preston had left her there and continued into the lower levels.
Medical staff treated the sedation while Rebecca watched remotely.
Olivia’s face looked so much like Sophie’s that Dr. Chen briefly thought the video feed came from Trauma Room 2.
When Olivia woke, her first question was:
“Did Sophie survive the stairs?”
She knew about the rehearsed fall.
Preston had shown her clips, claiming Sophie was weak because Rebecca encouraged disobedience.
Olivia had been taught to view her genetic twin as a failed version of herself.
Sophie had been taught nothing about Olivia.
The comparison depended on isolation.
Rebecca asked whether Preston hurt her.
“He said I had to help open Father’s office.”
“Arthur?”
Olivia nodded.
“He calls him Father too.”
Preston continued treating Arthur as an active authority years after his death.
The mansion speakers played recordings of Arthur’s voice, issuing daily instructions to staff and children.
Some recordings were old.
Others referenced current events.
Someone had continued creating messages under Arthur’s identity.
The lower office contained a control system connected to courts, hospitals, Havenbridge, and dozens of treatment centers.
The system’s active administrator used the title The Custodian.
Preston entered the office using Olivia’s thumbprint.
Federal agents reached the door seconds later.
It sealed.
Arthur’s voice came through the mansion speakers.
“Candidate P has achieved dual-subject control.”
Rebecca shouted at the nearest camera.
“He abandoned one girl unconscious and put the other in the hospital.”
The voice answered:
“Adversity reveals attachment.”
It was not a recording.
Someone was responding live.
Preston looked toward the office monitor.
“Father?”
A man appeared on-screen.
Older than Preston.
Thin.
Alive.
Arthur Hale had not died.
His death certificate was another Continuity record.
Preston’s face transformed from anger into the desperate expression of a frightened child.
“You said I would inherit when I brought them together.”
Arthur looked at him without warmth.
“You damaged Subject S-0 beyond protocol.”
“She resisted.”
“You lost control.”
“I did everything you taught me.”
“That is why you failed.”
For the first time, Preston understood he had never been the chosen heir.
He had been another subject.
Arthur activated the office locks.
A red warning appeared:
GUARDIAN CANDIDATE TERMINATION REVIEW.
Preston pounded the door.
“Father, let me out!”
Arthur looked past him toward the federal cameras.
“The girls require a more stable guardian.”
The system displayed a name.
REBECCA HALE.
Rebecca stared.
Arthur wanted her to control both girls.
Not because he trusted her.
