Chapter 6 - Trauma Room 2 Locks DownThe doors of Trauma Room 2 locked electronically.

Dr. Chen pressed the emergency release.

Nothing happened.

The ceiling camera continued tracking Rebecca.

Judge Bell’s voice remained calm.

“This hospital is interfering with an active family-court protection order.”

Detective Ortiz approached the glass from the hallway.

The door would not open from either side.

Hospital engineers discovered an external administrative command had placed the room into infectious-disease isolation.

Judge Bell’s office should not have possessed that authority.

Someone inside the hospital had linked Havenbridge to the emergency-management system.

Rebecca stood between Sophie and the door.

“What do you want?”

“Cooperation.”

“You helped them hurt her.”

“You are interpreting clinical intervention through the lens of personal resentment.”

“The phone recorded you.”

“A distressed child’s device captured fragments without context.”

“You told Preston not to call an ambulance.”

“I advised against unnecessary escalation.”

Sophie pulled the mask aside.

“You said I had to do it right.”

The judge went silent.

Rebecca looked at her daughter.

Sophie’s voice was weak, but she was awake.

Dr. Chen moved closer.

“Don’t strain yourself.”

Sophie continued looking toward the camera.

“You watched me fall.”

The red recording light blinked.

Judge Bell disconnected.

Seconds later, the infectious-lock command ended. Security entered the room and disconnected every external network line.

The hospital director, Amelia Ross, arrived personally.

She claimed Havenbridge’s system access had been authorized years earlier for court-ordered pediatric transfers.

“Who approved it?” Detective Ortiz asked.

Amelia checked the archived agreement.

Her face changed.

She had signed it.

Mallory told her Havenbridge handled emergency relocations of abused children whose guardians might attempt abduction.

The hospital provided private room access, elevator control, and confidential transport routes.

“What oversight existed?” Rebecca asked.

“Court orders.”

“Signed by Bell.”

Amelia looked toward Sophie.

The institution had surrendered independent judgment to the very judge exploiting it.

She ordered all Havenbridge access revoked.

The system refused.

Founder-level control belonged to a charitable organization called the Bell Family Protection Trust.

Judge Bell’s late father had funded the hospital’s pediatric wing.

The trust retained emergency authority over several security systems.

The hospital had literally built the judge’s access into its walls.

Engineers began physically isolating the network.

Meanwhile, Preston’s attorney presented a new court order.

Judge Bell had declared himself temporarily unavailable due to threats. Another judge, Caroline Voss, signed an emergency transfer directing Sophie to Havenbridge before midnight.

Rachel investigated Caroline’s background.

She was Mallory Pierce’s older sister.

The conflict had not been disclosed.

The transfer team arrived at the ambulance entrance wearing state-approved medical badges.

Their vehicle registration belonged to Preston’s company.

Rebecca held Sophie’s hand.

“They’re not taking you.”

Sophie looked terrified.

“Dad said Mom always makes it worse.”

“That’s what he needed you to believe.”

The child’s eyes filled.

“I put the phone in my shoe because he checks my pockets.”

“You were brave.”

“I waited too long.”

“No. You survived long enough.”

Sophie looked toward Dr. Chen.

“There’s another recording.”

“Where?” Rebecca asked.

“Not on the phone.”

She pointed toward her damaged sneaker.

Nora had removed the phone from one shoe.

The second sneaker remained sealed with her clothing.

Inside its heel, technicians found a memory card wrapped in tape.

It contained no audio.

It contained video.

The first frame showed a child seated inside Havenbridge.

The child was not Sophie.

Rebecca recognized him from a missing-person poster.

Evan Cole, age eleven, had vanished after Judge Bell granted his father emergency custody two years earlier.

The official record said Evan fled.

Sophie’s video showed him locked inside a treatment room.

And he looked directly into the hidden camera.
