Chapter 8 - Room ZeroSophie had first seen Room Zero on Preston’s laptop.

The screen displayed a steel door beneath Havenbridge with a biometric lock. Preston repeatedly attempted to open it using copied fingerprints and child-profile codes.
Every attempt failed.
One night, he forced Sophie’s thumb against a portable scanner while she slept.
The system accepted part of her profile.
“That’s why he kept asking about my birthmark,” Sophie said.
Rebecca touched the crescent-shaped mark beneath Sophie’s left wrist.
“What does it have to do with a door?”
Sophie did not know.
The federal team reached Continuity Site B before the convoy.
The property looked like an abandoned boarding school surrounded by woods.
Inside were classrooms converted into medical suites, interview studios, and sealed dormitories.
The children from Havenbridge had not arrived yet.
Officers established a roadblock.
The six vans changed direction before reaching it.
Someone was watching federal movements in real time.
Preston’s company used an encrypted emergency channel linked to state child-protection vehicles.
The network included police, social workers, judges, hospital administrators, and private transport staff.
Every institution intended to protect children had been turned into a map for avoiding oversight.
Investigators found Room Zero beneath the school.
Its door matched Sophie’s description.
A plaque beside it read:
ORIGINAL SUBJECT ARCHIVE.
The lock required a living biometric match.
Sophie’s hospital wristband transmitted an alert at the same moment officers touched the door.
Someone had connected her medical identity to the archive.
Dr. Chen removed the wristband immediately.
The hospital system displayed a new message:
SUBJECT S-0 STABLE. RETRIEVAL AUTHORIZED.
Rebecca stared at the designation.
“S-zero.”
Sophie was not simply another child targeted by Preston.
She was the original subject connected to Room Zero.
Rachel reopened Sophie’s birth records.
Rebecca gave birth at Saint Matthew’s Hospital twelve years earlier. The delivery was difficult, and Sophie spent three days in neonatal care.
Preston handled most of the paperwork because Rebecca required surgery.
The birth certificate contained an unusual notation:
Protective continuity review completed.
Rebecca had never seen it.
The reviewing psychologist was Mallory Pierce.
Mallory had evaluated Sophie at birth.
Judge Bell signed a sealed neonatal order.
Preston’s connection to the conspiracy did not begin during the divorce.
It began the day Sophie was born.
Rebecca remembered a nurse telling her Sophie’s bracelet had briefly been switched with another infant’s.
The hospital called it a clerical mistake.
Room Zero’s lock suggested it had been deliberate.
Federal technicians found an old photograph mounted beside the archive door.
It showed six newborns in hospital bassinets.
Each child wore a numbered bracelet.
Sophie was labeled S-0.
Another infant was labeled E-1.
Evan Cole.
Evan was born one year after Sophie, yet the photograph appeared to show them together.
The image had been manipulated—or the birth records had.
A seventh bassinet stood at the edge of the frame.
Empty.
The accompanying document described a program called Continuity Family Outcome Study.
Its stated purpose was to determine whether children’s loyalties could be redirected through controlled custody conflict.
The subjects were not chosen after their families broke apart.
Their family conflicts were encouraged from birth.
Rebecca’s marriage, Preston’s behavior, and the custody case may have been monitored as part of a long-term experiment.
Then the archive door emitted a tone.
Someone had activated it remotely.
The lock accepted Sophie’s live facial scan from the hospital ceiling camera before the network was disconnected.
Room Zero opened.
Inside, the first monitor displayed Rebecca holding newborn Sophie.
Beside her stood another woman wearing the same hospital gown.
She held an identical baby.
The file label read:
REBECCA HALE—MATERNAL DUPLICATE CONDITION.
Rebecca had no twin.

And she had given birth to only one child.
👉 Room Zero contained footage suggesting another woman had been used to duplicate Rebecca’s family from the moment Sophie was born.
