She refused privacy.
Detective Ortiz, Dr. Chen, Rachel, and federal investigators remained in the room.
“You have both girls now,” Arthur said.
“I have one injured daughter and one child you imprisoned.”
“Olivia is biologically connected to you.”
“That does not erase the life taken from her.”
“You can repair it.”
“No one repairs twelve years by taking control of another person.”
Arthur seemed disappointed.
He offered Rebecca legal guardianship over Sophie and Olivia, full access to the trust, and authority to close Havenbridge.
In return, she had to preserve Room Zero’s research archive and continue annual psychological assessments of both girls.
“You want the experiment to continue under a nicer name,” Rebecca said.
“I want the data preserved.”
“Children are not data.”
“They are both.”
Rebecca ended the call.
Arthur immediately activated his legal network.
A Connecticut judge issued an emergency order placing both girls under the Continuity trust pending evaluation.
Rachel challenged it.
The judge cited Arthur’s living status and claimed he was the girls’ biological father with superior rights.
Arthur had no relationship with them.
He had also financed the court’s family-services division.
Again, control hid inside legitimate structures.
Federal agents breached the office and found Preston unconscious after inhaling a sedative released through the ventilation system.
He survived.
He was taken into custody for medical evaluation, but his formal arrest remained delayed while competing jurisdictions reviewed the evidence.
The story had not ended with handcuffs.
It had expanded.
Arthur transmitted another message.
Mallory Pierce and Judge Bell had moved the Havenbridge children to three Continuity properties.
If Rebecca exposed the complete archive publicly, Arthur threatened to erase their identities and separate them permanently.
If she accepted temporary guardianship, he would provide the locations.
Detective Ortiz wanted to trace the signal.
Technicians found Arthur moving through a network of mobile command units.
No stable location.
Olivia was transported to Rebecca’s hospital under federal protection.
When the twins met, they did not embrace.
Sophie lay weak in bed.
Olivia stood at the doorway, wearing institutional gray clothing and watching her with suspicion.
“You caused trouble,” Olivia said.
Sophie looked toward Rebecca.
“That’s what Dad says.”
“Preston isn’t our father.”
Olivia’s face tightened.
“He raised me.”
“No. He hurt me.”
“He said you lied.”
Sophie pointed weakly toward the evidence bag.
“I recorded him.”
Olivia stared at the phone.
Arthur had taught her that recorded evidence could be manufactured.
Preston had taught Sophie that truth must be hidden.
Both girls had been prepared to distrust whatever the other offered.
Rebecca sat between them without forcing closeness.
“You do not have to decide anything tonight.”
Arthur’s system expected an immediate emotional reunion or conflict.
Rebecca gave them neither.
She gave them time.
Rachel’s DNA results arrived.
She was Rebecca’s biological sister.
She had also given birth to Olivia at sixteen through an unauthorized embryo transfer.
Rachel entered the room slowly.
Olivia looked at her.
“Are you my mother?”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Biologically, yes.”
“Why didn’t you come?”
“I didn’t know you existed.”
Olivia laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Rachel accepted the anger.
She did not demand belief.
The hospital lights dimmed.
Arthur’s voice returned through the ceiling speaker despite the disconnected network.
“S-0 subjects display maternal resistance.”
Dr. Chen looked upward.
The signal did not come from hospital wiring.
It came from Sophie’s IV monitor.
A tiny transmitter had been embedded inside the replacement sensor.
Someone on the medical staff had installed it after the previous device was discovered.
Nora examined the nursing log.
Only one person had changed that sensor.
Dr. Chen.
Every person turned toward him.
He stared at the record.
“I did not enter that room at that time.”
The ceiling camera showed him doing it.
