Chapter 15 - The Recording Behind the WallHospital engineers removed the panel behind Sophie’s trauma monitor.

A black server unit filled the hidden space.

It had been installed when the pediatric wing was renovated twelve years earlier—the year Sophie was born.

Arthur’s father funded the renovation.

Every sound, camera feed, medication entry, and security command in Trauma Room 2 had passed through the Continuity server.

Arthur had known Sophie’s condition from the moment Preston carried her through the doors.

He knew about the hidden phone before Nora opened the sneaker.

He allowed the discovery.

Rebecca stared at the server.

“This was planned too.”

Rachel examined the system logs.

Arthur did not expect Preston to lose control so violently. But once Sophie arrived at the hospital, he used the crisis to draw Rebecca, Rachel, Olivia, Diane, Mallory, Bell, and federal investigators toward the same archive.

The entire family conflict had become a final Continuity evaluation.

The destruction countdown showed twenty-three minutes.

Technicians could preserve the server by disconnecting it, but doing so would trigger identity replacement across remote courts and hospitals.

Leaving it connected allowed Arthur to retain access.

They needed his founder credential.

Detective Ortiz received a call from Preston’s medical unit.

He had awakened.

He wanted to speak with Rebecca.

Preston appeared by secure video, his wrists restrained to the hospital bed for safety.

No final arrest status had been determined.

His voice sounded empty.

“My father gave me the founder phrase.”

“What is it?”

“He said I would use it when I proved I could control both girls.”

“Then give it to us.”

“What happens to me?”

“That is not my decision.”

“Will Sophie ever speak to me again?”

“That is hers.”

Preston closed his eyes.

He wanted Rebecca to trade a child’s future contact for the code.

Even after everything, he understood relationships as bargaining power.

Sophie asked to hear him.

Rebecca hesitated, then allowed the call under Dr. Chen’s supervision.

Preston looked at the daughter he had raised and harmed.

“Sophie…”

She held the evidence bag containing her phone.

“You said I caused trouble.”

“I was angry.”

“You practiced my fall.”

“I thought your mother would take you.”

“You hurt me so she couldn’t.”

Preston began crying.

The tears might have been real.

They did not change the recording.

Sophie asked for the founder phrase.

Preston gave it.

A family is safest when one story survives.

The server accepted the words.

A final authorization screen appeared.

It required the voice of Subject S-0.

Sophie.

Arthur had designed the last decision around the child whose testimony everyone tried to control.

The system gave her three choices:

Preserve all identities under Continuity.

Erase all protected histories and restore biological records.

Transfer every file to independent case review.

Sophie selected independent review.

The server requested confirmation from S-0B.

Olivia stepped beside the bed.

For the first time, the girls stood together willingly.

Olivia confirmed.

The countdown stopped.

Remote files began transferring into separate sealed cases controlled by independent advocates and judicial review teams.

Havenbridge locations appeared.

Federal agents moved toward the missing children.

Judge Bell’s accounts froze.

Mallory’s professional credentials entered emergency suspension.

Preston’s company lost transport authority.

No final court judgments or arrests appeared.

But the system no longer belonged to one family.

Then Sophie’s hidden phone vibrated inside the evidence bag.

The device should have been in airplane mode.

A new recording file appeared.

Timestamp:

The present moment.

Someone was recording inside Trauma Room 2.

Nora looked toward the ceiling camera.

Its red light was off.

The sound came from behind the second wall panel.

Engineers opened it.

There was no camera.

Only a microphone and a sealed envelope addressed to Rebecca.

Inside was a photograph of Arthur Hale standing beside two newborn girls.

Sophie and Olivia.

A third newborn lay in another bassinet.

The label read:

S-0C.

Rebecca stared at the photograph.

“There were three embryos.”

Rachel read the attached note.

The third child had not been raised inside Continuity.

She had been placed with an outside family to test whether a child could escape the program entirely.

Current status:

UNKNOWN.

The hidden recording began playing automatically.

A teenage girl’s voice spoke.

“I found Room Zero before Sophie did.”

Sophie and Olivia looked at each other.

The girl continued.

“Arthur lied about which sister was the control subject. I was never outside the system. I was the one watching both of you.”

A live image appeared on the trauma monitor.

A girl around fifteen stood outside the hospital’s locked emergency entrance.

She had Sophie’s face, but she was older.

Beside her stood Arthur Hale.

He placed one hand on her shoulder.

The girl looked directly into the camera.

“Rebecca, he says you have to choose which daughter comes inside.”

Behind her, three black transport vans stopped beneath the emergency lights.

Their doors began opening.

And the children from Havenbridge stepped into the rain.
