“When my husband came back from his mother’s birthday party, smiling like nothing had happened, I handed him the divorce papers from my hospital bed… and watched the color drain from his face.”
Sienna Hayes was sitting upright in a hospital bed when Cameron walked into the room with a birthday gift bag still in his hand.
He smelled like expensive cake, champagne, and the life he had chosen while she was bleeding on an operating table.
Their newborn daughter slept against Sienna’s chest, wrapped in a white hospital blanket, tiny and perfect and alive by a margin too narrow to forgive.
Cameron smiled at first.
Not fully.
Just the casual smile of a man who expected anger, tears, maybe a dramatic conversation he could later blame on hormones.
Then he saw the doctor.
The nurses.
The security guard.
The woman in a gray business suit standing near the window with a leather folder.
And the papers in Sienna’s hand.
His smile broke.
“Sienna… what is this?”
Sienna’s fingers trembled, but her voice did not.
“You left me bleeding to celebrate your mother.”
The birthday gift bag slipped lower in his hand.
A blue ribbon brushed against the cold hospital floor.
“Sienna, I didn’t know it was that serious.”
The doctor stepped forward before Sienna could answer.
Her face was pale with controlled rage.
“Your wife nearly died delivering your baby alone.”
Cameron looked at the newborn.
Then at Sienna.
Then at the papers.
His throat moved.
Sienna pushed the document farther toward him.
“This is your divorce petition, Cameron.”
The room went silent.
Then the woman in the gray suit stepped beside him.
The security guard placed one firm hand on Cameron’s shoulder.
“Sign nothing.”
Her voice was calm.
“You’re being formally removed.”
Cameron stared at her.
“Removed from what?”
Sienna held the baby closer.
“From my medical decisions.”
“From my hospital room.”
“And from the life you abandoned before she even took her first breath.”
Cameron’s face went white.
Outside the window, morning light touched the glass.
