Patricia entered behind Cameron wearing pearls and a pale pink coat.
She looked offended before she looked worried.
That was her nature.
She glanced at the security guard.
Then at Nora.
Then at the doctor.
Then finally at Sienna and the newborn.
“Well,” Patricia said softly.
“This feels dramatic.”
Sienna did not answer.
Cameron held the flowers awkwardly.
“They said you had complications.”
Dr. Porter stepped forward.
“Your wife nearly died delivering your baby alone.”
Patricia’s face tightened.
“Surely there’s no need to accuse anyone.”
Nora closed the folder in her hands.
“No one is accusing.”
“We are documenting.”
Cameron looked at Sienna.
“Sienna, what is this?”
She handed him the papers.
“This is your divorce petition, Cameron.”
He stared at the page.
The birthday gift bag slid from his hand and hit the floor.
A small box wrapped in gold tissue spilled out.
Patricia gasped.
“Careful.”
Sienna looked at the fallen bag.
“Of course.”
“Wouldn’t want your gift ruined.”
Cameron stepped closer.
The security guard moved at the same time.
Cameron stopped.
“Sienna, I didn’t know.”
She lifted her phone.
“You knew enough to send my calls away.”
His face changed.
Patricia jumped in.
“The party was already underway.”
Sienna looked at her.
“I was bleeding.”
Patricia’s mouth opened.
Closed.
Then she said the sentence that ended any possibility of mercy.
“Women have given birth for centuries without making men choose between family obligations.”
The room went cold.
Dr. Porter looked like she might throw Patricia out herself.
Mrs. Rosenthal rose slowly from her chair.
She leaned on her cane and pointed at Patricia.
“She almost died while your son ate cake.”
Patricia’s eyes widened.
“Who are you?”
“The person who went with her when he didn’t.”
That shut the room down.
Cameron looked at Mrs. Rosenthal.
Then at Sienna.
Then at Clara.
For the first time, his expression contained something real.
Not guilt.
Fear.
He looked at Nora.
“What does formally removed mean?”
Nora handed him the second document.
“It means you are no longer recognized as Sienna’s medical proxy, you have restricted access to the child pending emergency review, and you are being escorted out if you do not leave voluntarily.”
Patricia whispered, “You can’t do that.”
Nora looked at her.
