PART 4

Sienna woke in recovery to pain, silence, and a nurse wiping tears from her own face.

That frightened her more than the machines.

Nurses were trained not to look like that.

Her first word was not Cameron.

It was the baby.

“Where is she?”

The nurse leaned close.

“She’s alive.”

“She’s small, but strong.”

Sienna closed her eyes.

A sob tore through her chest and made the incision burn.

Dr. Porter entered ten minutes later.

Her white coat was wrinkled.

Her eyes were tired.

But her voice was steady.

“You had a placental abruption.”

“You hemorrhaged.”

“We had to move fast.”

Sienna swallowed.

“How close?”

Dr. Porter hesitated.

That hesitation became the answer.

“Very.”

Sienna looked toward the empty chair beside the bed.

“When did Cameron get here?”

The nurse looked down.

Dr. Porter’s mouth tightened.

“He hasn’t.”

The world did not shatter dramatically.

It simply went quiet in the place where trust used to live.

Sienna reached for her phone with one weak hand.

There were two missed calls from Cameron.

Both after midnight.

One voicemail.

She played it.

His voice was irritated.

“Hey, I saw your messages.”

“Mom’s party ran late.”

“Don’t make this a thing.”

“We’ll talk tomorrow.”

Sienna stared at the screen.

Don’t make this a thing.

She had nearly died.

Their daughter had nearly died.

And he had called it a thing.

Dr. Porter asked gently, “Do you have someone we can call?”

Sienna thought of her parents, both gone.

Her sister overseas.

Friends Cameron had slowly convinced her were too dramatic, too jealous, too involved.

Then she thought of her college roommate, Nora Blake.

Now an attorney.

The one Cameron disliked most because she never laughed at his excuses.

Sienna whispered, “Nora.”

The nurse made the call.

Nora arrived before dawn in a trench coat over pajamas, hair still wet, face furious.

She took one look at Sienna.

Then at the baby in the bassinet.

Then at the empty husband’s chair.

Her voice went cold.

“What do you need?”

Sienna stared at the ceiling.

“A divorce.”

Nora did not ask if she was sure.

That was why Sienna loved her.

She opened her briefcase and said, “Then we start before he gets here.”
