PART 2

Cameron had promised he would be there.

That was the part Sienna kept replaying.

Three weeks before the birth, he sat beside her during a high-risk appointment while Dr. Elaine Porter explained the danger.

Placenta complications.

Possible hemorrhage.

Emergency delivery risk.

No stress.

No delay.

No being alone if contractions started.

Cameron held Sienna’s hand in the exam room.

He nodded at the doctor.

“I understand.”

“I won’t leave her.”

Sienna believed him because she wanted to.

Because marriage makes people keep hoping even after hope has become evidence against them.

But Cameron had another promise that weekend.

His mother’s sixtieth birthday.

Patricia Hayes had planned it for six months.

A ballroom dinner.

A string quartet.

Gold invitations.

A three-tier cake.

A speech from her only son.

When Sienna asked if they could skip it because her due date was close, Patricia laughed.

“Babies come when they come.”

“My birthday comes once.”

Cameron said his mother was under a lot of pressure.

Sienna said she was nine months pregnant with a medical warning in her chart.

He said she was being unfair.

That word had become his favorite whenever she needed something inconvenient.

Unfair.

Unfair to ask him to miss dinner.

Unfair to make his mother feel unimportant.

Unfair to expect him to sit around waiting for contractions.

That Saturday afternoon, Sienna felt the first sharp pain while folding baby clothes.

Not a normal contraction.

A tearing, wrong pain low in her body.

She called Cameron.

No answer.

She called again.

No answer.

She texted.

Something is wrong.

Please come home.

The message showed delivered.

No reply.

At 6:14 p.m., she called the restaurant hosting Patricia’s party.

A woman answered.

Sienna asked for Cameron.

She heard music in the background.

Laughter.

Then Cameron’s voice, far away.

“Tell her I’ll call later.”

The line clicked dead.

Sienna stood in the nursery holding the phone, feeling warmth spread down her legs.

Blood.

Her knees weakened.

She dialed 911 with shaking fingers.

And in the birthday ballroom across town, Cameron raised a toast to his mother while his wife crawled toward the front door.
