Nora did not only bring divorce papers.
She brought protection.
First, she contacted the hospital administrator and documented Cameron’s absence during a life-threatening emergency.
Second, she helped Sienna revoke Cameron’s temporary medical decision authority.
Third, she requested a visitor restriction.
Fourth, she filed an emergency custody and safety notice for the newborn.
Sienna listened from the hospital bed while holding her daughter for the first time.
The baby was impossibly small.
A pink mouth.
Dark hair.
Tiny fingers opening and closing against Sienna’s skin.
Sienna named her Clara.
Not after anyone in Cameron’s family.
That mattered.
Nora asked, “Do you want Cameron listed on any immediate access forms?”
Sienna looked down at Clara.
For years, she had been trained to soften every boundary.
To give Cameron time.
To consider Patricia’s feelings.
To avoid humiliating the family.
But nearly dying changes the sound of permission.
“No.”
Nora wrote it down.
Mrs. Rosenthal stayed in the corner chair, wrapped in a hospital blanket and looking like a witness sent by God.
She spoke only once.
“He told you not to make it a thing?”
Sienna nodded.
The old woman’s eyes flashed.
“Then make it a court record.”
By morning, Nora had everything printed.
The divorce petition.
The emergency protective filing.
The medical authority revocation.
The financial preservation notice.
Cameron still had not appeared.
At 9:22 a.m., he texted.
Mom wants to stop by after brunch.
Try not to start a fight.
We’ll bring flowers.
Sienna read the message twice.
Then handed the phone to Nora.
Nora’s face did not change.
But her pen snapped in half.
Dr. Porter came in soon after to check Sienna’s incision.
When she heard Cameron was coming with Patricia, she stepped into the hall and returned with the hospital representative and security.
“Mrs. Hayes,” the representative said gently.
“You control who enters this room.”
Sienna looked at Clara.
Then at the door.
“I want them to enter.”
Nora looked surprised.
Sienna’s voice stayed weak but clear.
“I want him to see what he lost.”
