Chapter 17 - The Route That Betrayed HimMark stabilized the helicopter two miles offshore.

Ethan remained pressed against the cabin wall, breathing heavily.
The pilot held the emergency control lock in place, preventing anyone behind him from reaching the primary controls again.
“You’re turning around,” Ethan said.
“I’m holding position until rescue arrives.”
“No one is coming.”
Mark looked at the dark communication module.
“You disabled the aircraft tracking.”
“And the recording.”
“You admitted that very easily.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
Mark tapped his headset.
“My headset has independent storage.”
The statement was partly a bluff.
The headset recorded limited cockpit audio, but Mark did not know whether the struggle had damaged it.
Ethan did not know either.
His face changed.
Mark looked toward the navigation screen.
Although the helicopter’s external telemetry had gone dark, the internal route history remained visible.
The original tourist path appeared in blue.
Their actual path appeared in red.
A deliberate deviation over isolated cliffs.
A long offshore turn.
A hover near the point where Ava went overboard.
Another approach toward the ledge after her landing.
Every movement contradicted an accidental fall.
Ethan saw the route.
He reached for the screen.
Mark blocked him.
“You can shut down the transmitter,” Mark said, “but you cannot change where we flew.”
Ethan removed the electronic key again.
He pressed it repeatedly.
Nothing happened.
The key had already completed every command available to it.
The route history remained.
Then Mark’s emergency receiver crackled.
A broken voice entered the cockpit.
“Seven-Four-Tango… signal received… Coast Guard aircraft inbound…”
Ethan stared at the radio.
Mark exhaled.
Someone had heard Ava’s second transmission.
Rescue was coming.
Ethan looked toward the coastline.
Ava’s reflective wing flashed in the sunlight.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
She was alive.

And she was communicating.
👉 Ethan had disabled the helicopter’s tracking, but the flight path itself had become a map of attempted murder.
