The lights above her moved in a bright line as they rolled her through the corridor.
Doctors examined her injuries.
A fracture in her ankle.
A dislocated shoulder.
Deep bruising from the emergency harness.
No internal bleeding.
No immediate sign of placental injury.
The baby’s heartbeat remained stable.
Ava was admitted for continuous monitoring.
Two hours later, her security director, Rachel Kane, appeared outside the room carrying a tablet and a sealed evidence case.
A uniformed officer stood beside her.
“You should be resting,” Rachel said.
“I can rest after I know.”
Rachel closed the door.
“Ethan was detained at the landing site.”
“Did he speak?”
“He claimed you became emotionally unstable and jumped.”
Ava almost laughed.
The lie was exactly what she had predicted.
Rachel placed the tablet on the table.
“The emergency packet uploaded successfully. Cabin audio is clear.”
Ava looked toward the screen.
Rachel did not play it.
She did not need to.
Ava could still hear Ethan’s voice in her mind.
Because accidents need privacy.
“There is more,” Rachel said.
She opened a financial file.
Three days before the flight, Ethan had transferred large amounts from one of Ava’s family-controlled investment accounts into shell companies.
He had used forged authorization.
One shell company had paid for modifications to the helicopter.
Another had purchased the remote shutdown equipment.
The third had made a payment to a legal consultant specializing in inheritance disputes involving unborn children.
Ava felt the room turn cold.
“He was preparing to challenge the baby’s rights,” Rachel said.
Ava placed one hand over her abdomen.
Ethan had not only wanted her wealth.
He had intended to erase their child’s claim before birth.
