Chapter 19 - The Voice on the RadioMark heard the rescue coordinator more clearly on the second transmission.
“November Seven-Four-Tango, maintain position. Coast Guard helicopter approaching from the north. Confirm condition of passenger.”
Mark looked toward Ava’s signal flashes.
“Passenger alive on cliff ledge. Approximately seven months pregnant. Possible injuries.”
Ethan surged forward.
“She is lying!”
Mark turned.
“You haven’t spoken to her.”
“She staged this.”
“Sit down.”
“She built the device. She planned all of it.”
Mark stared at him.
“You are saying your pregnant wife planned to be thrown from a helicopter?”
Ethan realized how insane it sounded.
His mouth tightened.
The radio crackled again.
“Confirm suspected assault?”
Mark kept his eyes on Ethan.
“Confirmed.”
Ethan attacked.
He grabbed the back of Mark’s seat and pulled with both hands.
The helicopter tilted.
Mark fought the controls.
The open side door filled with sky.
Ethan reached for the radio microphone.
Mark struck his wrist.
The microphone fell between the seats.
Ethan kicked it toward the open cabin.
Mark caught the cable before it disappeared outside.
“Stop!” Mark shouted.
“You already ruined me!”
“You did that yourself.”
Ethan froze.
The words seemed to strike him more deeply than any physical blow.
Then the rescue coordinator’s voice returned through the headset.
“Seven-Four-Tango, your transmission is recorded. Law enforcement has been notified.”
Ethan heard it.
His face emptied of color.
Recorded.
Law enforcement.
Words he had believed the ocean would prevent from ever entering the story.
He looked toward Ava’s blinking signal on the cliff.
She had survived.
The pilot had witnessed him.
The route remained stored.
The distress call had been recorded.
His watch still screamed beneath the seat.
Every layer of his plan was turning against him.
Then another aircraft appeared beyond the northern cliffs.
Orange and white against the blue sky.
