Chapter 29 - The Child He Never Expected to MeetThe jury returned after less than four hours.

Ethan stood beside his attorneys.

Ava sat behind the prosecution table with Rachel and Mark nearby.

The verdicts were read one by one.

Attempted murder.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Aircraft sabotage.

Evidence tampering.

Each guilty verdict removed another piece of Ethan’s performance.

By the final count, he no longer looked furious.

He looked empty.

The judge ordered him remanded until sentencing.

As officers approached, Ethan turned toward Ava.

“You ruined everything,” he said.

The courtroom went silent.

Ava almost pitied him.

After the recordings, the money, the helicopter, and the fall, Ethan still believed destruction had begun with her resistance.

“No,” Ava answered. “I survived everything.”

He was led away.

Ava left the courthouse without speaking to reporters.

Three days later, she went into labor.

The delivery was difficult but safe.

Her daughter was born shortly before sunrise.

Ava named her Grace.

Not because survival had been gentle.

Because grace was what Ethan had never understood.

It was not weakness.

It was strength that did not need cruelty.

Mark visited the hospital and stood awkwardly near the doorway until Ava invited him closer.

“You turned back,” she said.

“I should have noticed sooner.”

“You noticed when it mattered.”

Rachel placed a tiny company identification bracelet beside Grace’s crib.

“No tracking devices,” Ava said.

Rachel smiled.

“Just her name.”

Ava looked at her sleeping daughter.

Ethan had planned a world in which neither of them existed.
