Chapter 24 - Ava Is FoundThe Coast Guard helicopter carried Ava north toward the nearest trauma center.

A medic examined her ankle, shoulder, pulse, and abdomen.

“Can you feel the baby moving?”

“Yes.”

“When was the last movement?”

“Seconds ago.”

The medic placed a portable monitor against Ava’s abdomen.

For several unbearable moments, only rotor noise filled the cabin.

Then a rapid heartbeat entered the headset.

Strong.

Fast.

Alive.

Ava covered her mouth with both hands.

Tears moved into her hair.

The medic smiled.

“That’s your baby.”

Ava closed her eyes.

She had survived Ethan’s hands.

The fall.

The damaged canopy.

The cliff.

The collapse.

But hearing that heartbeat was the first moment she allowed herself to believe survival might mean more than simply remaining conscious.

Her security device rested dark against her wrist.

A Coast Guard crew member examined it.

“What is this?”

“A prototype.”

“It transmitted directly to us.”

Ava looked at him.

“You received it?”

“The distress burst gave us your approximate location. The aircraft beacon narrowed it.”

Ava exhaled.

The system had worked.

Not perfectly.

Not safely.

But enough.

“Did it send the recording?”

“We were told an external server received a full emergency packet.”

Ava stared through the window toward the coastline.

Ethan had believed isolation meant invisibility.

He had not understood that modern systems could witness without human eyes.

Every sensor had become a witness.

Every timestamp had become testimony.

Every movement had become a statement he could not intimidate.

The medic adjusted the monitor.

The baby’s heartbeat continued.

Ava whispered, “Your father tried to erase both of us.”

The words hurt.

But they also clarified something.
