Chapter 11 - The Vinci FoundationElaine created the Vinci Foundation when Vince was six.

He struggled with reading, impulse control, and severe anxiety. Thomas called him weak and predicted he would never manage money.
Elaine created a trust to fund treatment, education, and long-term support.
She used Vince’s childhood nickname because Thomas did not know it.
After Elaine disappeared, Thomas discovered the trust but could not access it. He redirected Adrian’s stolen disability income through the foundation, hoping repeated deposits would establish operational control.
“Why use Adrian’s money?” Vince asked.
“To connect both sons to the account,” Elaine said. “Then he could argue family ownership.”
“You knew?”
“Not until I accessed Unit Seven’s ledger.”
Vince laughed bitterly.
“Everybody built something in my name without telling me.”
The foundation’s original terms required Vince and Adrian to act jointly after age thirty.
Neither could control it alone.
Thomas’s years of manipulation had turned the brothers against each other precisely because cooperation would have protected them.
Adrian looked at Vince.
“You still stole from me.”
“Yes.”
“You still hit me.”
“Yes.”
“You don’t get forgiven because Dad trained you badly.”
“I know.”
For once, Vince did not defend himself.
The ninety-four million dollars did not belong solely to either brother. Much of it could be traced to stolen benefits and property transfers from Unit Seven victims.
Adrian instructed independent trustees to freeze the entire account for restitution.
Vince stared.
“That money could protect us.”
“It came from people who were told they couldn’t protect themselves.”
“What happens to me?”
“You answer for what you did.”
Vince looked toward Elaine.
She did not rescue him.
This time, family did not mean exemption.
Owen’s department placed Vince in a guarded medical unit while prosecutors reviewed the assault, financial cooperation, coercion, and warehouse evidence.
No final punishment was shown.
Elaine gave Adrian a folder containing correspondence from Thomas.
He had spent years trying to convince her Adrian was too rigid and Vince too unstable to act as joint trustees.
She refused.
Thomas then created the warehouse accident.
“He believed your injury would make you dependent on Vince,” Elaine said. “He believed Vince’s debt would make Vince dependent on him.”
“And you watched from Unit Seven?”
“I was confined after confronting him.”
“For three years?”
“For eighteen.”
Adrian struggled to accept the number.
Elaine had been alive throughout his adolescence, his graduation, the accident, and every lonely year in the apartment.
Thomas sent her edited recordings portraying her sons as happy and uninterested in finding her.
“Did you ever try to contact us?”
“Hundreds of times.”
Thomas intercepted letters, calls, and emails.
One message escaped.
The hidden microphone.
Elaine had embedded emergency access inside the back-brace transmitter when she learned Adrian was receiving equipment from Grayson. A technician loyal to her modified it.
She waited for a clear act of abuse before activating it remotely.
“You heard Vince slap me.”
“Yes.”
“How long were you listening before that?”
Elaine looked away.
“Six weeks.”
Adrian felt the betrayal immediately.
“You heard everything.”
“I needed evidence connecting Vince to Thomas.”
“You listened while he stole food, medication, and money.”
“I was trying to expose Unit Seven.”
“You let me remain the evidence.”
Elaine’s face broke.
“I told myself one more recording would free everyone.”
Adrian rolled away.
The people who loved him repeatedly decided he could endure one more injury for a larger purpose.
Owen followed but did not touch the chair.
“Where do you want to go?”
“Somewhere no one is listening.”
The sheriff arranged a temporary accessible apartment under Adrian’s sole control.
That evening, Adrian searched the new room himself.
No transmitters.
No cameras.
No hidden locks.
Then his chest microphone, sealed inside an evidence bag across town, activated remotely.
It transmitted a live audio file to Adrian’s phone.
Thomas’s voice said:
“Elaine is lying about the foundation.”
A second voice answered.
Robert Hale.
May you like
“I know.”
👉 The hidden microphone began transmitting again, revealing Owen’s father was secretly speaking with Thomas after supposedly being rescued.
