Chapter 14 - The Courtroom Without a JudgeCarla entered with state officers, but no one fired.

Thomas stood above them with a weapon.

Mara controlled the building’s exits.

Caleb remained beside Vince.

Outside, frightened families believed law enforcement might steal their restitution.

Adrian positioned his wheelchair at the center of the abandoned courtroom.

“Everyone keeps deciding what happens next because they have a gun, a badge, a file, or a key.”

Thomas laughed.

“You think a speech changes ownership?”

“No. Evidence does.”

Adrian activated the microphone on his chest.

Unlike the first device, this one transmitted to a public archive controlled by victim advocates, not police or family.

Every word in the courtroom began streaming outside.

Thomas’s smile vanished.

Mara looked almost impressed.

Adrian addressed her.

“Did you drive me from the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Thomas intended to force my signature?”

“Yes.”

“Why help him?”

“To identify the full Unit Seven system.”

“You let him drug me.”

“Yes.”

He turned toward Thomas.

“Did you order the warehouse frame replaced?”

“Yes.”

Robert’s old recording and the live confession aligned.

“Did you intend to paralyze me?”

Thomas hesitated.

Mara answered for him.

“He intended permanent cognitive injury.”

Thomas fired toward the ceiling.

Dust fell across the courtroom.

“Enough.”

The families outside heard everything.

Several began demanding the doors opened.

Adrian continued.

“Did you use Vince’s gambling addiction to control him?”

Thomas stared at his older son on the hospital bed.

“Vince chose weakness.”

Vince forced his eyes open.

“You taught me.”

Thomas raised the gun toward him.

Mara moved first.

She triggered an old courtroom security barrier. A reinforced glass panel dropped between the balcony and the floor.

Thomas fired.

The bullet struck glass.

Carla’s officers reached the upper stairwell.

No final arrest was shown; Thomas fled through a judge’s passage before they entered the balcony.

Caleb released Vince and attempted to follow Mara.

She stopped him.

“You’re done.”

“You promised protection.”

“I promised usefulness.”

Caleb understood he had become disposable.

He surrendered his weapon to Carla.

Mara opened the courthouse doors.

Families entered slowly.

Adrian asked them to nominate independent representatives to oversee the foundation alongside disabled survivors, not only lawyers or relatives.

Mara objected.

“They can be manipulated.”

“So can you.”

“Institutions fail.”

“So do secret guardians.”

The crowd supported Adrian.

Mara’s emergency control over the foundation required confirmation within twenty-four hours. Without victim consent, the subaccounts would return to the frozen central trust.

She could no longer move the money alone.

Elaine arrived under protection.

The sisters faced each other for the first time in decades.

“You used my sons,” Elaine said.

“You hid behind Adrian’s name.”

“I created the trust.”

“And made him the target.”

Neither woman could claim innocence.

Vince was transported back to medical custody. Before leaving, he gave Adrian the apartment keys.

“I don’t deserve to ask for anything.”

“No.”

“But the broken table has another compartment.”

“What’s inside?”

“Dad’s original warehouse phone.”

Vince had hidden it years earlier after Thomas ordered him to destroy it.

He feared using the evidence and feared losing it.

The phone contained Thomas’s messages from the night of the accident.

One message was addressed to an unknown contact.

ADRIAN SURVIVED. BEGIN PHASE TWO.

The reply said:

Disability will make him credible when he exposes Unit Seven. Keep him angry.

Adrian read it again.

Thomas had not acted alone.

Someone wanted Adrian to survive, inherit Unit Seven, and eventually expose the network.

The accident, the abuse, the microphone, and Mara’s intervention might all belong to a larger operation.

Carla traced the unknown number.

It was registered through the sheriff’s emergency communications system.

Owen looked at the account creation date.

His father Robert had opened it.

Robert had not merely helped plan a minor accident.

He had expected Adrian’s eventual investigation to destroy Thomas and Mara together.

Adrian confronted him.

“You built my suffering into an evidence strategy.”

Robert did not deny it.

“I thought the only way to expose both networks was through an owner they couldn’t discredit.”

“So you helped make me disabled because a disabled owner would look credible?”

“No. Thomas changed the mechanism.”

“But you needed me injured.”

Robert looked toward Owen.

“Yes.”

Owen stepped away from his father.

The last alliance inside the investigation shattered.

Then Robert gave Adrian the location of Phase Two.

A fortified rehabilitation estate outside the city.

“Thomas is going there,” he said.

“What is Phase Two?”

Robert’s voice broke.

“A replacement.”

Security footage from the estate showed a man in a wheelchair entering through the front gates.

He had Adrian’s face.

Same hair.

Same scar near the eyebrow.

Same disability certificate displayed on his lap.
