Chapter 5 - The Chair That Could Lock ItselfA mobility technician disconnected the receiver.

The wheelchair’s remote system could lock its brakes, drain its battery, change speed limits, and transmit location data.

Vince had often blamed Adrian when the chair stopped near the apartment door.

“You forget to charge it,” he would say.

“You’re panicking.”

“You couldn’t live alone.”

The chair had been teaching Adrian dependence.

Owen ordered Grayson Medical Mobility’s records seized.

The company’s registered director was Dr. Evelyn Marr, the rehabilitation specialist who treated Adrian after the warehouse accident.

She had recommended the chair.

She had also signed a report declaring Adrian unable to manage complex financial decisions without family support.

Adrian remembered her kindness.

She spoke softly, praised Vince for helping, and repeatedly told Adrian not to exhaust himself by asking about the accident.

Her report became the foundation for Vince’s access to his benefit account.

“She worked for my father,” Adrian said.

“Or Grayson Recovery,” Owen replied.

“Same difference.”

A court clerk arrived with an emergency guardianship order.

It named Vince temporary guardian and authorized his release from questioning so he could resume responsibility for Adrian’s care.

Owen read it once.

Then tore the service copy in half.

The clerk stared.

“You cannot do that.”

“The named guardian assaulted the protected person on a live recording.”

“The order was signed by Judge Miriam Vale.”

“Before or after the assault?”

The filing time was 4:06 p.m.—hours before Vince stole the cash.

Like the warehouse debt, the legal response had been prepared in advance.

The clerk tried to retrieve the original paperwork.

Owen kept it.

Two men in county jackets entered the hospital hallway, claiming they had been ordered to transport Adrian to a private rehabilitation center.

Their badges appeared valid.

Carla checked the employee database.

Both identities belonged to men currently working another shift forty miles away.

Impostors.

Owen’s deputies blocked them.

The men fled through the stairwell.

One dropped a medical transport form signed by Dr. Marr.

Destination:

Briar Dock Warehouse, Unit Seven.

They were no longer pretending Adrian belonged in a clinic.

Someone wanted him taken directly to the warehouse.

Owen moved Adrian to a secure county residence rather than an official rehabilitation facility.

Adrian refused a replacement power chair supplied by the hospital. He used a manually controlled loaner after technicians confirmed it contained no transmitter.

For the first time in years, the brakes responded only to his hands.

Vince called again through his attorney.

He claimed Thomas had ordered the benefit theft.

Every stolen payment was transferred through Vince’s gambling accounts to disguise the destination.

The “warehouse debt” was not a real loan.

It was an accounting mechanism used to move money from Adrian’s protected income into Unit Seven’s operating fund.

“What operation?” Adrian asked.

Vince answered reluctantly.

“People like you.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

Grayson targeted disabled adults with settlements, inherited property, or protected income. Family members were encouraged to create dependence, secure guardianship, and divert assets.

Some victims were placed in private residences.

Others simply disappeared from public records.

Unit Seven stored the files.

“You helped them.”

“I thought it was only paperwork.”

“You hit me for cash.”

“They were going to hurt me.”

“You always found someone weaker to stand between you and fear.”

Vince fell silent.

Then he said, “There’s a woman outside the sheriff’s office. She looks like Mom.”

Elaine Cole had been dead for eighteen years.

Vince sent a photograph taken through the interview-room window.

A silver-haired woman stood beneath a streetlamp wearing Elaine’s old red coat.

She looked directly toward the camera.

In one hand, she held the missing apartment keys.
