Chapter 8 - The Second SheriffThe impostor’s patrol vehicle was found abandoned near Briar Dock.

Inside were a silicone facial mask, voice-modulation equipment, and Owen’s stolen spare uniform.
The man had not needed to remain disguised long. He required only enough resemblance to pass cameras and distracted personnel.
His real identity was Caleb Marr.
Dr. Evelyn Marr’s younger brother.
Caleb worked as an actor and private security contractor. Grayson paid him to impersonate officials during removals, hospital transfers, and emergency hearings.
The false county employees who came for Adrian had belonged to the same operation.
“People trust uniforms before faces,” Adrian said.
Owen looked at the mask.
“Or they trust a face they think they know.”
The stolen certificate’s tracker had been disabled, but its last signal came from the old warehouse district.
Thomas possessed the key now.
Why continue negotiating?
Because Adrian’s biometric signature was still required.
The certificate opened the first layer.
Only Adrian could authorize the final trust transfer.
He remained valuable.
Owen arranged a heavily guarded transport to Briar Dock. Adrian insisted on going.
Vince was placed inside another vehicle as a cooperating witness.
He claimed he knew a service entrance wheelchair users could access.
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“The warehouse had an accessible entrance all along?”
“It was hidden.”
Thomas did not keep Adrian away because the building was physically inaccessible.
He kept him away by teaching him it was.
Briar Dock rose beside the river like a rusted fortress. Most windows were boarded. Security lights moved across the loading yard.
The convoy stopped beyond the outer fence.
Vince pointed toward an abandoned dispatch office. Beneath a steel cabinet was a freight elevator descending to Unit Seven.
Owen’s team entered.
The elevator recognized Vince’s access card.
Adrian rolled inside with Owen while Carla guarded Vince.
The lower level was clean, bright, and active.
Medical beds lined one corridor. Offices contained guardianship files. A wall map marked private residences across five states.
Unit Seven was not merely an archive.
It was the center of a living operation.
They found empty chairs fitted with biometric scanners.
Wheelchairs identical to Adrian’s stood in rows.
Each contained a remote receiver.
An alarm activated.
Steel doors closed between Owen and his deputies.
Adrian and Owen were trapped inside the central archive.
A monitor illuminated.
Thomas appeared.
He was alive, silver-haired, and wearing a dark suit.
Beside him stood Evelyn Marr.
Elaine and Robert were not visible.
Thomas held Adrian’s disability certificate.
“You were always the difficult son.”
Adrian looked into his father’s face.
“You broke my spine.”
“I stopped you from walking into a war you could not survive.”
“You mean I discovered your shipments.”
“You discovered a system protecting assets from irresponsible heirs.”
“By imprisoning disabled people?”
“By preserving families.”
Owen raised his weapon.
Thomas smiled.
The glass between them was reinforced.
Evelyn activated a screen showing Vince inside the upper corridor.
Caleb Marr stood behind him with a gun.
Thomas addressed Adrian.
“Sign the transfer, and Vince lives.”
Adrian felt no immediate sympathy.
Vince had assaulted, robbed, and betrayed him.
Thomas understood.
“He is still your brother.”
Adrian met his gaze.
“That mattered only when you needed something from me.”
Vince looked toward the camera.
“Adrian, don’t sign.”
Thomas turned in surprise.
Vince continued.
“I opened the warehouse debt account. I copied every payment. The files are on Adrian’s stolen phone.”
The phone Vince took from the apartment had not been for personal use.
It contained the financial backup.
Vince had stolen it to keep Thomas from realizing Adrian already possessed the ledger.
For the first time, his cruelty and his attempted resistance occupied the same moment.
Caleb pressed the gun against Vince’s head.
Then every monitor inside Unit Seven changed.
Elaine appeared.
She stood inside the control room holding an emergency transmitter.
“I activated Adrian’s microphone,” she said.
Thomas’s confidence vanished.
Elaine pressed the switch.
Every remote-controlled wheelchair in the facility unlocked simultaneously.
Doors began opening across Unit Seven.
Voices rose from hidden rooms.

Dozens of people were still inside.
👉 Elaine seized the control system and released Unit Seven’s captives, but Thomas still held the certificate capable of transferring their stolen assets permanently.
