Chapter 7 - The Parents Who SurvivedOwen wanted to storm Briar Dock immediately.

Federal investigators refused.
Unit Seven had no verified interior plans, and Thomas controlled the warehouse security network. A direct entry could kill Elaine, Robert, and any other people hidden inside.
Adrian studied the live feed.
Elaine sat upright despite her age. Robert’s left arm rested unnaturally beside him, possibly restrained beneath the table.
Neither looked toward the camera.
“Why don’t they react to our voices?” Adrian asked.
The investigator enlarged the image.
Small devices covered both ears.
Noise-canceling medical headsets.
They could not hear the exchange.
Thomas controlled what they knew.
The disability certificate contained more than proof of Adrian’s protected income. A microprinted number along the bottom matched the Unit Seven trust account.
The original certificate functioned as a physical authentication key.
Thomas needed it to access the archive.
Vince knew this.
That was why he snatched the document before taking the cash.
The theft had not been spontaneous.
Adrian called him again.
“You were supposed to take the certificate.”
Vince did not deny it.
“Dad said it was the only way to clear the debt.”
“Why steal the cash?”
“To make it look normal.”
“You hit me as part of the performance?”
Vince began breathing heavily.
“The microphone wasn’t supposed to be there.”
“Who told you to move my wheelchair away from the door?”
“Dr. Marr.”
She wanted Adrian positioned where he could not reach the exit when the transport team arrived.
The remote listener activated the transmitter early, bringing Owen before Thomas expected.
“Who activated it?” Adrian asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You recognized Owen’s voice.”
“Dad warned me Hale was looking into Unit Seven.”
“You said he wasn’t supposed to be there.”
“He was supposed to arrive after you were gone.”
The plan required the sheriff to discover an empty apartment, stolen cash, and evidence suggesting Adrian had voluntarily left with his brother.
Vince would later claim Adrian demanded access to Unit Seven and became unstable.
The prewritten guardianship order would support the story.
Owen looked at Adrian.
“Someone inside Thomas’s network sabotaged the timing.”
“Elaine?”
“Possibly.”
Or Robert Hale.
Both had spent years under Thomas’s control and may have found a way to trigger the receiver.
The federal team prepared a controlled exchange.
Adrian would carry a duplicate disability certificate embedded with a tracker. The original would remain secure.
Thomas anticipated that.
He called Adrian directly.
“No copies.”
“How would you know?”
“The certificate includes a pressure pattern created when Elaine signed the trust.”
Only the original could unlock the archive.
Thomas offered proof of life.
Elaine removed one headset and spoke.
“Adrian, do not give him the certificate.”
Her voice was older but unmistakable.
He remembered her singing while cooking, reading beside his bed, and refusing to let Thomas mock him for crying.
“Mom?”
Her face broke.
“I’m sorry.”
Thomas replaced the headset before she could continue.
Robert was allowed three words.
“Owen, trust Adrian.”
The feed ended.
Owen looked shaken.
His father had not said trust the sheriff’s office.
He had said trust Adrian.
Adrian made the decision.
“I’ll take the original.”
Owen objected.
“They need me alive to open the trust.”
“They needed you unable to reach the warehouse. That doesn’t mean they won’t hurt you.”
“They have spent three years building documents that say I’m incapable. I’m done letting them use safety as a reason to move me.”
The exchange was scheduled for midnight.
Then Carla discovered the original certificate was missing from the evidence vault.
The access log showed Owen Hale had removed it fourteen minutes earlier.
Owen had been standing beside Adrian the entire time.
Someone had cloned the sheriff’s biometric credentials.
Security footage showed a man in Owen’s uniform leaving the vault.

He had Owen’s height, face, and voice.
👉 Thomas’s network had created a perfect duplicate of the sheriff, and the impostor was already carrying the real certificate toward Unit Seven.
