Chapter 1

Her Final Call Ended in Silence Until Her Retired Army Father Reached the Mansion.
Arthur Hale found his daughter on the front lawn of an upscale Northern Virginia mansion, barefoot in a pale-pink formal gown, shaking so badly she could barely stand.
He dropped to one knee and pulled Emily against his black Army dress uniform.
One gloved hand protected the back of her head.
Behind them, two police officers restrained Gavin Pearson as he twisted in their grip.
“This is a private family matter!”
Arthur slowly lifted his eyes.
Nothing in his face moved except the cold fury settling there.
Emily clutched the front of his uniform with trembling fingers.
“He said nobody would believe me.”
Arthur cupped her bruised cheek with care so gentle it made her cry harder.
“I believed you the moment you called.”
Margaret Pearson crawled forward on the grass, reaching toward her son.
“Arthur, you don’t understand what she did!”
Arthur rose, helping Emily stand behind his shoulder.
His body became a wall between his daughter and the Pearson family.
Gavin stopped struggling when he finally noticed Arthur’s medals, insignia, and tan beret.
Arthur reached into his uniform pocket and removed Emily’s damaged phone.
He did not unlock it.
He did not show the screen.
He only looked directly at Gavin and Margaret.
“I understand exactly what your son tried to hide.”
Gavin’s face lost all arrogance.
Near the mansion porch, a broken baseball bat lay beside a sealed evidence bag.
A detective stepped from the doorway with a closed case.
Arthur guided Emily toward the waiting ambulance.
Police lights reflected across his medals.
