Chapter 2

Arthur Hale had answered the phone on the second ring.

He always answered Emily’s calls quickly.

Not because she was fragile.

Because she rarely called without purpose.

“Dad.”

One word.

Barely audible.

Arthur stood in his kitchen, still in half-uniform from a veterans’ ceremony earlier that afternoon.

The tone in her voice changed everything.

“Emily?”

A breath.

A broken sound.

Then she whispered the old emergency phrase from her childhood.

“Blue porch light.”

Arthur’s hand tightened around the phone.

That phrase meant: I cannot speak freely. Come now.

He had taught it to her when she was sixteen and dating a boy who followed her home after she ended things.

Back then, she laughed at him.

“Dad, you’re too military.”

He said, “No. I’m your father.”

Now, years later, she used it.

Then the line filled with noise.

A crash.

A man’s voice in the background.

Emily gasped.

The call went silent.

Arthur did not call back.

Calling back could put her in more danger.

He took one breath, the kind he had taken before difficult operations and worse news.

Then he called the police, gave the address, and said, “Possible active domestic assault. Victim called and disconnected. I am en route.”

He did not drive like an emotional father.

He drove like a command sergeant major who had learned urgency without chaos.

By the time he reached the gated mansion, patrol vehicles were already turning in behind him.
