Chapter 9

The ambulance doors were open.

Emily stopped before reaching them.

Arthur felt her hesitate.

“You don’t have to look back,” he said.

“I know.”

But she did.

Not because she wanted Gavin.

Because fear likes to check whether danger is still there.

Gavin stood on the lawn with officers at his sides.

Margaret remained behind him, no longer shouting, face pale as the detective passed with the closed evidence case.

The mansion door stayed open.

The place looked different now.

Less grand.

More hollow.

Emily leaned against Arthur.

“I thought the call ended too soon.”

“It didn’t.”

“I barely said anything.”

“You said enough.”

Her eyes filled again.

“I was afraid you’d think I was causing trouble.”

Arthur looked down at her.

“You are my daughter. Trouble can wait its turn.”

For the first time since he arrived, Emily almost smiled.

It vanished quickly, but Arthur saw it.

He wrapped one arm around her shoulders and began guiding her toward the ambulance again.

Behind them, Gavin shouted something, but the words no longer reached her the same way.

Arthur’s uniform brushed against her gown.

Police lights moved across his medals.

Emily held onto him and walked forward.

Not healed.

Not safe forever.

But no longer alone on the lawn.
