Chapter 7

Emily had stopped asking Gavin to stop months earlier.

That was the part she hated herself for.

Not because the abuse was her fault.

It was not.

But because survival had taught her to speak smaller.

To time her breathing.

To watch Margaret’s moods.

To hide pain before company arrived.

Gavin always knew when to act hurt.

“You make me sound like a monster,” he would say.

Then Margaret would step in.

“Emily, marriage requires maturity.”

Maturity meant silence.

Family meant silence.

Privacy meant silence.

The mansion became a place where Emily’s voice disappeared room by room.

The final call had not been planned.

It happened when Gavin realized she had tried to send something out.

A message.

A photo.

Maybe more.

He grabbed for the phone.

Emily turned away.

He said no one would believe her.

Margaret said Arthur was too old to understand their kind of life.

That was when Emily pressed call.

She did not know if Arthur would hear enough.

She only knew she needed one person outside the mansion to hear anything.

Now, standing on the lawn behind her father, she watched Gavin restrained by officers and Margaret kneeling in the grass, still trying to defend him.

And a strange, painful clarity came over her.

They had not been afraid she was lying.
