Chapter 6

Arthur still had Emily’s damaged phone in his pocket.
One officer had found it near the porch.
Screen cracked.
Case bent.
Still powered on.
Arthur had recognized it instantly because Emily had the same photo on the back since college—a tiny sticker of a blue porch light she once placed there as a joke.
Now it was evidence.
He did not unlock it.
He did not show messages.
He did not play the call.
He only held it up long enough for Gavin to see.
“I understand exactly what your son tried to hide.”
Margaret’s face changed.
Gavin’s changed faster.
Not guilt fully revealed.
Not confession.
Fear.
The kind that appears when someone realizes the object they thought they destroyed has survived.
One officer glanced toward the mansion entrance.
Near the porch, a broken baseball bat rested beside a sealed evidence bag.
No one examined it on-screen.
No one explained it.
No one revealed the full evidence.
But Gavin looked at it.
Then at the phone.
Then at Emily.
That sequence told Arthur more than any denial.
Emily whispered, “He took it.”
Arthur did not ask what “it” meant in front of everyone.
He only said, “Not anymore.”
A detective stepped out of the mansion carrying a closed evidence case.
Margaret saw it and froze.
Gavin’s arrogance finally drained into panic.

The mansion had stopped protecting him.
