Chapter 8

Margaret Pearson tried one final performance.

Tears.

A shaking voice.

A mother’s wounded face.

“My son is being treated like a criminal because she wanted attention.”

Emily flinched.

Arthur felt it.

He turned slightly, shielding her from the words as much as from the people.

“Enough,” he said.

Margaret looked up at him.

“You don’t know her like we do.”

Arthur’s voice remained controlled.

“I know her well enough to know when she is terrified.”

“She lies.”

“No.”

“She manipulates.”

“No.”

“She destroyed this family.”

Arthur took one step forward.

Not toward violence.

Toward truth.

“Your son did that.”

Margaret’s mouth trembled with anger.

Gavin struggled again, but the officers tightened their hold.

He suddenly noticed the detective carrying the closed case toward a patrol vehicle.

“What’s in there?” he shouted.

No one answered.

That frightened him more.

Arthur guided Emily a few steps away from the shouting, toward the waiting ambulance beyond the driveway.

Emily looked back once.

Gavin met her eyes.

For the first time, he did not look powerful.

He looked exposed.

Not finished.

Not sentenced.

Not arrested in any final way.

Exposed.

That was enough for the moment.
