Chapter 5

Gavin called it private because private was where he won.

Private hallway.

Private bedroom.

Private argument.

Private apology.

Private correction.

Private family matter.

He knew what words to use when police arrived.

“She is upset.”

“We had a disagreement.”

“She fell.”

“She gets emotional around my mother.”

Margaret reinforced every line.

“My son is a good man.”

“Emily has always been unstable.”

“You don’t know what she said to him.”

Arthur heard all of it.

He had heard better lies from worse men.

The officers kept Gavin restrained, professional and controlled, no handcuffs visible, no completed arrest.

Gavin still tried to command the lawn.

“This is a private family matter!”

Arthur finally looked at him.

A single look.

Gavin stopped mid-breath.

Arthur’s medals were not decoration to him. They were memory. Weight. Years of command. Years of seeing men reveal themselves under pressure.

Gavin mistook age for weakness.

That was his mistake.

Arthur helped Emily stand and moved her behind his shoulder.

Margaret crawled forward in the grass, face twisted with panic and rage.

“Arthur, you don’t understand what she did!”

Arthur looked down at her.

“What did she do?”

Margaret’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

Because the answer she wanted to give was not safe in front of police.

Emily’s fingers tightened on Arthur’s sleeve.

Arthur understood.

The truth was not only what Gavin had done.

It was what the family had tried to hide after.
