Chapter 10

No handcuffs were shown.

No arrest took place.

No passport was confiscated.

The final legal outcome remained unresolved.

The confrontation ended inside Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, beneath bright daytime window light, with an aircraft waiting outside the glass and the departure gate standing only steps away from the life Adrian Mercer thought he had stolen cleanly.

Elena remained seated at the marble café table in her ivory satin blouse, coffee in one hand, black smartphone beside her laptop, and the brown legal folder protected beneath her palm.

Her eyes were wet.

But her expression was calm.

Quietly triumphant.

Wounded, but no longer available for deception.

Adrian stood between Elena and the approaching authorities, sunglasses now hanging uselessly from one hand. His black rolling suitcase remained beside Vanessa, no longer a symbol of escape—only proof that he had meant to leave.

Vanessa stood pale in her red dress, clutching the suitcase handle while staring at her dead phone, the fantasy of their getaway collapsing with every frozen card and unanswered question.

The investigator held his calm posture.

“Mr. Mercer, step away from the departure gate.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

For a second, he seemed to expect the old version of her to appear.

The wife who would soften.

Explain.

Protect.

Delay her own pain so he could keep moving.

Elena only lifted her coffee.

“You should go with him,” she said.

His face tightened.

“You planned all of this.”

She looked past him toward the aircraft.

“No, Adrian. You planned this.”

Her gaze returned to his.

“I arrived first.”

Behind him, the officers waited.

Vanessa stopped trying her phone.

The boarding lane stayed closed to him.

And Adrian finally understood the quiet woman he left at home had followed the money faster than he could follow the gate signs.
