Chapter 3

The café table had been chosen carefully.

Clear view of the departure gate.

Clear view of the escalator.

Clear view of the corridor from priority check-in.

Close enough for Adrian to see her before boarding.

Far enough from the gate that no one could claim she blocked him physically.

Elena had ordered one coffee and taken two sips.

The rest had gone cold while she worked.

Her laptop contained copies.

The legal folder contained originals.

Her phone contained the messages Adrian never knew she recovered from the cloud backup he forgot to disconnect.

The first hour at the airport felt almost unreal.

Families passed with backpacks.

Business travelers argued softly into earbuds.

Children dragged stuffed animals across polished floors.

An elderly couple shared a muffin near the window.

Life continued casually around Elena’s private disaster.

That helped.

It reminded her Adrian’s betrayal was not the whole world.

Only the part she was done protecting.

At 11:14 a.m., the airport investigator arrived.

He introduced himself quietly, showed identification near his belt, and asked whether she was sure she wanted to proceed at the gate.

Elena looked at the departure screen.

“I want him to know he didn’t leave before I knew.”

The investigator studied her face.

Not pitying.

Assessing.

“Do not engage physically. Do not block travel yourself. Let us handle the airport side.”

“I understand.”

“Are you safe sitting here?”

Elena almost laughed.

Safety had become such a strange word.

She was safer at an airport table with strangers passing by than she had been at home beside a man who kissed her forehead while draining accounts.

“Yes,” she said.

He nodded and moved away to wait.

Elena opened her laptop again.

One more confirmation arrived from the bank.

Accounts restricted pending review.

One more from the attorney.

Emergency filings received.

One more from the investigator.

Approach only after visual confirmation.

Then Adrian appeared with Vanessa.

Smiling.

Sunglasses on.

Suitcase rolling behind him.

Vanessa leaning into his side like the future had already been purchased.

Elena lifted her coffee.

Her hand did not shake.
