Chapter 9

Adrian stepped back from the table.

His face had gone pale beneath the terminal lights.

For years, he had built power in private rooms.

Home offices.

Hotel suites.

Late-night calls.

Closed-door meetings where Elena was expected to trust whatever summary he offered afterward.

But the airport was public.

Too public.

Bright windows.

Security cameras.

Boarding systems.

Financial alerts.

Witnesses pretending not to watch.

Everything Adrian did now created more than memory.

It created record.

Vanessa gripped the suitcase handle as if it were the only thing still solid.

“Should I call someone?” she asked.

Adrian looked at her.

“No.”

Elena said quietly, “You should.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Adrian’s eyes flashed.

“Do not advise her.”

Elena held his gaze.

“You don’t get to control every woman in this conversation.”

That sentence reached Vanessa.

She looked at Adrian differently.

The investigator gestured again.

“Mr. Mercer. Now.”

Adrian moved at last.

Two steps.

Then he turned back.

“Elena, this will ruin everything.”

She lifted the legal folder slightly.

“No. This is what was left after you tried to ruin everything.”

He swallowed.

“You’ll regret this.”

The security officers shifted.

Elena did not.

“For the first time in months,” she said, “I know exactly what I’ll regret and what I won’t.”

His jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at the aircraft outside the window.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“It means I regret trusting you after the first missing statement. I regret explaining away the first late-night transfer. I regret letting you call my caution paranoia.”

Her eyes hardened.

“But I won’t regret being here before boarding closed.”

The investigator waited.

Adrian looked toward the gate one last time.

The escape was close enough to see.

Far enough to be impossible.

Vanessa’s phone buzzed, then went dark.

She whispered, “Adrian…”

He did not answer.

Elena raised her coffee cup again.

Her hand was steady now.
