Chapter 4

Vanessa noticed the problem before Adrian fully understood it.
Her phone had been her confidence all morning.
Boarding pass.
Hotel confirmation.
Car service.
Private villa deposit.
Shopping card.
Joint itinerary.
All of it sat behind her red manicure and smug little smile.
Then the first payment failed.
She tapped again.
Declined.
She refreshed.
Error.
She switched cards.
Frozen.
The smile vanished.
“Adrian,” she whispered.
He was still staring at Elena.
“What?”
“Our cards are frozen.”
“Use the other one.”
“I did.”
His face tightened.
Vanessa glanced toward the gate.
“The boarding pass won’t clear either.”
That got his attention.
He turned on her like she had betrayed him by reporting consequences.
“What do you mean it won’t clear?”
Vanessa held up the phone.
The screen was visible to him, but Elena did not look.
She did not need to.
No readable details mattered.
Only Vanessa’s fear.
Adrian stepped toward Elena’s table.
“What did you do?”
There it was.
Not why are you here?
Not are you okay?
Not Elena, let me explain.
What did you do?
As if the betrayal were not the theft, but the interruption.
Elena placed the coffee down carefully.
“I protected everything you tried to steal.”
His eyes flicked toward the legal folder.
He recognized the color.
Brown.
Heavy.
The folder she used for property records, business certificates, and original signed documents.
He had always hated that folder.
It contained things he could not charm.
Vanessa moved closer, trying to regain control.
“Elena, this is embarrassing. Whatever you think is happening—”
Elena looked at her.
Vanessa stopped.
There were moments when silence said, I know more than you hope.
This was one.
Adrian leaned down, voice low.
“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“I know the flight number.”
His face paled.
“I know the account names.”
Vanessa froze.
“I know the transfer times.”
The investigator began walking toward them.
May you like
Elena added softly, “And I know you weren’t planning to come back.”
