Chapter 5

Adrian looked over his shoulder and saw the investigator approaching.
That was when his expression changed from anger to calculation.
Elena knew that face.
It was the one he wore in conference rooms when a deal turned against him.
Reframe.
Minimize.
Separate the witnesses.
Move the conversation.
He straightened and forced a laugh.
“This is a marital misunderstanding.”
The investigator stopped several feet away.
“Mr. Mercer, step away from the departure gate.”
Adrian’s smile stiffened.
“I’m not at the gate.”
“You were moving toward international departure with restricted travel activity flagged for review.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
“Restricted?”
Adrian snapped, “Don’t say anything.”
The investigator’s eyes moved to him.
Elena watched Vanessa hear the tone.
The same tone Elena had lived with privately for years.
Vanessa had probably believed she would only receive the charming version.
The version that called her brilliant.
Beautiful.
Misunderstood.
Essential.
But pressure reveals ownership language.
Adrian had just spoken to her like property that might damage his position.
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the suitcase handle.
The two uniformed airport security officers stood behind the investigator, calm, visible, not touching anyone.
No handcuffs.
No arrest.
No passport confiscation.
Just presence.
That was enough to make Adrian’s voice lower.
“Elena, call them off.”
She lifted one eyebrow.
“Who?”
His jaw tightened.
“The bank. The airport people. Whoever you dragged into this.”
“I didn’t drag anyone.”
She touched the legal folder.
“I answered questions.”
His eyes sharpened.
“What did you give them?”
Elena’s gaze held his.
“Enough to make them ask you better ones.”
Vanessa whispered, “Adrian, what accounts?”
He did not look at her.
That was answer enough.
Elena felt no pleasure.
Only a clean sadness.
Vanessa had not accidentally stepped into a love story.
She had stepped into a theft and mistaken the getaway for romance.
The investigator spoke again.
“Mr. Mercer, keep your hands visible and step farther from the boarding lane.”
Adrian’s hand twitched toward the folder.
Elena did not move.
The security officers noticed.
So did Adrian.

He stopped.
