Chapter 6

The folder contained no dramatic confession on its cover.

No label.

No threat.

Just thick paper and the weight of preparation.

That seemed to infuriate Adrian most.

He wanted to know what Elena had.

How much.

Which documents.

Which signatures.

Whether she had found the offshore request.

Whether she had traced Vanessa’s consulting invoices.

Whether she knew about the second phone.

Whether the legal filing named the airport departure or only the frozen accounts.

The not knowing broke his performance.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “this can still be handled privately.”

She looked around the terminal.

At the café table.

At Vanessa.

At the investigator.

At the gate where he had planned to vanish.

“You lost privacy when you bought two one-way tickets with money you moved after midnight.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“One-way?”

Adrian’s eyes flashed.

“It was flexible travel.”

Elena looked at her.

“Did he tell you that?”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

No answer.

The investigator remained still, but Elena saw him listening carefully.

Adrian realized it too.

His mouth closed.

For once.

Vanessa took one step away from him.

Small.

But visible.

The suitcase still stood beside her.

The same suitcase Adrian had packed with the arrogance of a man certain his wife would be at home opening empty accounts long after boarding.

Elena’s phone buzzed on the table.

She glanced down.

Did not open the message.

Adrian stared at it.

“Who is that?”

She lifted her coffee.

“Someone who answers when I call.”

The sentence landed harder than she expected.

For years, Adrian had trained her to wait.

Wait for explanations.

Wait for affection.

Wait for access.

Wait for the truth.

Now he was the one waiting, and he hated every second.

Vanessa whispered, “Adrian, did you drain joint accounts?”

He looked at her then, furious.

“You don’t understand business.”

Elena almost smiled.

Same sentence.

Different woman.

The investigator’s expression did not change, but one of the security officers shifted closer.

Adrian noticed.

His confidence shrank another inch.
