Chapter 2

Claire did not cry immediately.

That surprised her.

She had imagined betrayal would feel like collapse.

Instead, it felt like standing inside a room where every sound had been turned down.

The cheers blurred.

The brass band somewhere near the lawn became distant.

The graduates in black gowns moved around her like shadows.

Only three things stayed sharp.

The envelope in her hands.

Michael’s sealed folder.

Nathan’s face going pale.

A full scholarship.

The words did not fit inside her mind at first.

For four years, Nathan had told her tuition was crushing him.

He told her medical school was more expensive than anyone warned.

He told her loans would destroy them unless they made hard choices.

So Claire made them.

She sold her car.

Dropped her master’s program.

Worked evenings at the pharmacy.

Took weekend shifts at a clinic desk.

Skipped dental work.

Skipped birthdays.

Skipped sleep.

Nathan called it partnership.

Claire called it love.

Now Michael Reed stood in front of her with proof Nathan never needed those sacrifices for tuition at all.

Claire slowly turned toward her husband.

Nathan had not moved.

His expression was no longer cold.

It was afraid.

That frightened Claire more than the divorce papers.

Because Nathan was not afraid of losing her.

He was afraid of what she had just heard.
