Chapter 5

Claire remembered the first tuition payment.
She had cried in the bank parking lot afterward.
Not because she regretted it.
Because she was proud.
Nathan had been accepted into one of the most prestigious medical schools in Boston, and she believed she was helping build their shared future.
He told her the deposit deadline was brutal.
He said financial aid was delayed.
He said scholarships were competitive and unpredictable.
“I hate asking you,” he said, eyes wet.
Claire believed those eyes.
She wired the money.
Then came the second request.
Then the third.
Books.
Housing gaps.
Lab fees.
Exam prep.
Conference travel.
Emergency expenses.
Each time, Nathan made it sound temporary.
Each time, Claire rearranged her life around him.
When she asked for receipts, he kissed her forehead and said, “Do you really not trust me?”
That question trained her.
Trust became not asking.
Love became paying.
Marriage became debt she could never finish proving she deserved.
Now she held divorce papers at graduation while Michael held evidence that Nathan had been funded all along.
Claire’s chest tightened.
She looked at Nathan and realized the cruelty was not that he no longer needed her.

It was that he may never have needed what he took from her.
