Chapter 6

People began to notice.
Not everyone.
Graduations are loud, distracted places.
But nearby families saw Claire’s face.
Saw Nathan’s pale silence.
Saw Michael holding the sealed folder.
A mother in a navy dress stopped smiling.
A graduate lowered his phone.
Someone whispered, “Is everything okay?”
Nathan heard it and immediately changed posture.
He turned slightly, giving the watching crowd his best wounded expression.
“Claire is overwhelmed,” he said.
Claire almost laughed.
There it was.
The old strategy.
Make her emotion the problem.
Make his cruelty look like her instability.
Michael stepped closer, not touching Claire, but standing beside her.
“She is not overwhelmed. She is being told the truth.”
Nathan’s eyes flashed.
“You have no right.”
Michael held up the folder.
“You lost the right to privacy when you handed her legal papers in the middle of a public ceremony.”
Claire looked at the envelope in her hand.
The papers inside suddenly felt less like an ending and more like evidence of Nathan’s confidence.
He had believed she would fold.
Cry.
Leave.
Disappear quietly.
Instead, she lifted her chin.
“Open it,” she said.

Nathan’s face drained further.
