Chapter 3

Nathan recovered first.

He always did.

That was one of the reasons people admired him.

He could walk into a room late and somehow make everyone feel lucky he arrived.

He could insult someone and make it sound like advice.

He could lie without raising his voice.

Now he stepped toward Claire and Michael with a controlled smile.

“Michael,” he said. “This is not the time.”

Michael did not lower the folder.

“That’s what you said every time I told you to tell her.”

Claire looked at Michael.

Every time.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

Claire felt the words land inside her chest.

This was not new.

Someone had known.

Someone had warned him.

Someone had watched her work herself thin while Nathan accepted her money and her belief.

Nathan reached for Claire’s elbow.

She stepped back before he touched her.

The movement was small, but his face changed.

He was used to her waiting.

Listening.

Explaining away discomfort.

Not stepping away.

“Claire,” Nathan said quietly, “don’t let him embarrass you.”

She looked down at the envelope.

Then back at him.

“You gave me divorce papers at your graduation.”

Michael’s eyes hardened.
