Chapter 4

Michael Reed had never been Claire’s close friend.

That made his intervention harder to dismiss.

He was not jealous.

Not dramatic.

Not part of their marriage.

He had simply been there.

In the library when Claire delivered homemade meals Nathan barely thanked her for.

At study events when Nathan joked that Claire was “basically my scholarship fund.”

In hospital corridors when Claire waited hours after a double shift to drive Nathan home.

Michael had watched.

At first, he thought their marriage was just uneven.

Then he saw Nathan’s award notice.

Full tuition.

Housing stipend.

Research grant.

Covered.

Michael confronted him once in the anatomy building stairwell.

Nathan laughed.

“Claire likes feeling useful.”

Michael told him that was cruel.

Nathan answered, “You don’t understand marriage.”

After that, Michael started keeping copies of what he could lawfully access and what Nathan publicly accepted.

Not to destroy him.

To stop pretending.

Now, at graduation, Nathan had handed Claire divorce papers like a receipt.

Michael decided silence had become participation.

He held the sealed folder between them.

“I should have said something sooner,” he told Claire.

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes,” she whispered. “You should have.”

Michael accepted that without defending himself.

Nathan looked more frightened by that than by accusation.
