Michael did not open the folder immediately.
That restraint mattered.
He looked at Claire first.
“You should choose whether to see this here.”
Claire understood.
Once she saw the proof, she could not unknow it.
Once other people heard it, Nathan could not easily bury it.
But the final truth would not be revealed all at once.
Not where the university band still played and families held bouquets.
Not while Nathan searched for a way to turn the scene against her.
Claire looked at Michael.
“Tell me only what I need to know right now.”
Michael nodded.
“He had full tuition covered. Housing support too. The school disbursed it directly.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“That is confidential.”
Claire turned to him.
“No. My life became part of it when you asked me to pay.”
He flinched.
For four years, Nathan had been comfortable with Claire’s exhaustion.
But not with her clarity.
That was new.
Michael lowered the folder slightly.
“I don’t know where all your money went,” he said carefully.
Claire appreciated the honesty.
