Chapter 9

Claire thought she would feel satisfaction seeing Nathan afraid.

She did not.

She felt grief.

Not for the marriage ending.

That had ended the moment he pushed the envelope into her hands.

She grieved the woman she had been.

The woman who celebrated every exam score.

Who packed lunches.

Who sent money with encouraging notes.

Who believed every delay, every excuse, every promise that “when I’m a doctor, it will all be worth it.”

She had loved him with the kind of loyalty people write vows about.

He had treated that loyalty like a resource.

Nathan looked at her now, eyes darting between the folder and the watching graduates.

“Claire,” he said, softer. “Please.”

That word almost broke her.

Because he knew how to sound like the man she had married.

Michael shifted, ready to intervene if Nathan moved closer.

Claire did not need him to.

She took one step toward Nathan herself.

Not to forgive.

Not to accuse.

Only to look directly into the face of the man who thought her final contribution would be silence.

“Did you ever need my money?”

Nathan’s lips parted.

No answer came.
