Husband Returns From His Business Trip and Finds His Bruised Wife and Newborn Barely Surviving While His Mother Tries to Hide What Happened.
Ethan Parker dropped his brown leather briefcase beside the bed.
The sound hit the quiet bedroom like a gunshot.
Hannah sat against the white pillows, holding their six-day-old son against her chest. Her cream nursing camisole hung loose on her exhausted body. One eye was bruised. Both wrists were marked darkly. Her arms looked like someone had gripped them too hard, too often.
Owen cried weakly in the white blanket, his tiny hospital cap slipping sideways.
Ethan rushed toward them.
“Hannah… who did this to you?”
Hannah did not answer.
Her tear-filled eyes moved past him, toward the adjoining living room.
Patricia Parker rose slowly from the sofa in her floral dress.
“She’s exhausted and emotional. She bruises herself.”
Ethan turned toward his mother.
Her explanation had come too fast.
Too prepared.
Hannah clutched Owen tighter.
“They took my phone… and wouldn’t let me call a doctor.”
Courtney Parker’s face drained of color from the adjoining room.
Patricia shot her a warning glance.
Ethan stepped between Hannah and his family, pulling out his phone.
“Neither of you comes near my wife or son again.”
Patricia started forward.
Ethan raised one hand and stopped her without touching her.
Hannah looked down at the bruises around her wrists.
“Tell the doctor to photograph everything.”
Outside, faint sirens began to rise.
