Chapter 7

Courtney began crying before help arrived.
Ethan did not trust it.
“I didn’t know it was that bad,” she said.
Hannah looked at her from the bed.
“You were there.”
Courtney’s tears stopped.
Patricia’s eyes cut toward her daughter.
“Courtney, sit down.”
“No,” Ethan said. “She can stand where I can see her.”
Patricia’s face flushed.
“You are speaking to your mother.”
“I know exactly who I’m speaking to.”
The sentence changed the room.
For most of his life, Ethan had been trained to soften when Patricia used that tone.
Mother.
Family.
Respect.
Gratitude.
He had obeyed her moods without calling it obedience.
But Hannah was sitting bruised in their bed, six days postpartum, and Owen’s body was still trembling against his chest.
Respect had limits.
Family had responsibilities.
Mother was not a license.
The distant sirens grew louder.
Patricia looked toward the window.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Hannah watched Ethan watching them.
Something fragile appeared in her face.
Not happiness.
Not yet.
Recognition.
He believed her.

And belief, after days of being trapped, felt like air returning to the room.
